'Our fire district will never forget': North Spokane bridge to be renamed in honor of fallen firefighter Lt. Cody Traber - From KREM 2 News

Washington's Transportation Commission approved renaming the bridge where Lt. Traber died in the line of duty in 2021.

SPOKANE COUNTY, WA — Hugs and handshakes were shared Wednesday morning in Walla Walla’s city hall, as members of Spokane County Fire District 9, Spokane Fire District 9 Firefighters IAFF Local 2916 and the state’s Transportation Commission celebrated a unanimous vote to honor fallen firefighter Cody Traber.

Lieutenant/paramedic Traber died August 26, 2021, while responding to the report of a brush fire near Highway 395 and Wandermere Road. However, when crews arrived they were unable to find any evidence of a fire in the area, Division Chief Bob Shindelar said at the time. Traber went up to the Wandermere Bridge to gain a better vantage point in order to locate the fire. Shortly after he got there, Traber fell off the bridge. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No wildfire was found, according to Shindelar.

Now the bridge where Traber died will be dedicated in his honor. Washington's Transportation Commission approved naming the North Spokane Corridor Bridge for Lt. Traber, after a proposal from Fire Dist. 9 and the greater Spokane Fire and Emergency Services region.

Chief Matt Vinci, who has served District 9 for the last year, called Traber’s death a profound loss for the entire Washington fire service.

Over 5.5 miles of hose gets tested annually. Crews work with a contractor over a two-day period to make sure all of our hose gets tested for continued use.

This is important both for the safety of our firefighters and for the Washington Survey and Ratings Bureau (who set the foundation for traditional insurance ratings).

Firefighter Fenton reviews Stevens County District 1 Ice Rescue

02/06/2026

Firefighters with IAFF Local 4333 routinely train in ice and cold-water rescue techniques to ensure operational readiness during extreme freezing conditions. Recently, that training was put to use when the Station 2 crew responded to Loon Lake for a wildlife rescue involving a deer trapped on the ice.

Using cold-water rescue procedures and specialized equipment, firefighters safely removed the animal from the hazard. Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife later assumed care and released the deer back into the wilderness.

Emergencies don’t always look the same — but preparation matters every time. IAFF Local 4333 is here for our community, ready to respond when you need us most.

IAFF Local 4333 Stevens County Professional Firefighters are honored to support a special homecoming for Sergeant Joshua Elliott, made possible by Homes For Our Troops.

After enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps following 9/11, Sgt. Elliott was severely injured by an IED during his second deployment to Afghanistan in 2011. Despite life-altering injuries, Josh continues to serve others as the founder of Angel Peak Adaptive Sports, helping injured athletes thrive here in Eastern Washington.

Today, crews proudly escorted a procession through town to welcome Sgt. Elliott home and honor his sacrifice as he prepares to receive a specially adapted HFOT home built for independence and accessibility.

Join us in showing your support and gratitude 🇺🇸
