As the year winds down of our 70th year; we reflect on our history.
As WWII was unwinding, The Korean war was on going; Camp Atterbury provided service to the town. The camp had decreased activity and eventually shut down. The town's community decided to form a Fire Dept. The Nineveh Volunteer Fire Department was founded in May 1955 in the basement of the Nineveh Christian Church. Members from the Atterbury Fire Department helped organize and train the founding members of the Nineveh Volunteer Fire Department.
Funding was near non-existent. The department's first treasurer's report showed a balance of $3.47. The Department hosted fish frys every month and would send out in the mail a donation card. The meeting minutes of the department showed that a balance of $400 dollars was deposited after the first fish fry. The first truck was then purchased for $350, a 1942 open cab Seagrave pumper from the Michigan Navy, military surplus. Members would share gear that was stored on the truck. This continued for several years. In 1964, a new pumper was purchased to replace the 1942 Seagraves pumper. The Dept. has had several other apparatus since then. Such as, fire engines, brush trucks (apparatus for fighting brush/wild fires), rescue trucks (apparatus for vehicle extrication and other rescue operations), tanker trucks for hauling water in unhydrated areas of the district, also an ambulance and squad for EMS.
The fire station was built on the old Petro property west of the Nineveh Creek. A two-bay station with apparatus stacked three deep. In 1983 the station added a 3-bay add-on. This allowed for larger apparatus to be purchased. Since then, there have been other add-ons, one add-on was to add a kitchen to help with fish fry's and other events. Funding was still raised by hosting fund raisers and donated items. One of the fund raisers was parking cars and traffic control at the Nineveh High School basketball games.
The run load grew gradually. The department's first year run log showed 11 fires for the year. Today we respond to more emergencies other than just fires. We now respond to around 600 calls for service a year including medical emergencies, car accidents, various rescue, and fires. Receiving money from the Nineveh Fire Protection District formed in 1988 a tax was created to help fund area fire dept. 's to support them in their efforts to serve the community.
After department members noticed a void in service for ambulances in the southern half of Johnson county, an ambulance was purchased in late 2013 to help better service the community. Before the purchase of the ambulance the community was waiting on an ambulance to come from Franklin and other areas. Which in some cases would take around 25 to 30 minutes (sometimes even longer) for a transporting unit to arrive on scene. The ambulance helped the department to get the patients to the hospital or to an intercept point with an ALS unit more rapidly (this drastically improved community members outcomes). With this new tool our Firefighter/EMTS were able to get patients to definitive care faster.
Around the early to mid 2010’s there was a shortage of volunteer firefighters around the country, and The Nineveh Township Volunteer Fire Dept. was no exception. After seeing a decline of volunteers on the roster and showing up to emergency calls the department members decided that they had to explore a new option. In late 2015 The members decided to use some of the funds gained from the ambulance, to have a trial period of paid stand-by to staff the firehouse Monday thru Friday with two people 8am to 4pm. This was to help cover the times of the day when the volunteer members of the department were at their full-time jobs. With success, the program stuck. Since then, the dept has expanded the paid stand-by program to 4 people Monday thru Friday 8am to 4pm and 2 people at nights and weekends which meant 24/7 365 days a year staffing for the station.
