This page is here to inform residents about the issues caused from flushable wipes and FOG. Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) come from meats, butters, lard, food scraps, sauces, dressings, dairy products and cooking oil. When FOG goes down the drain it hardens and causes sewer pipes to clog. This can lead to a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) where raw sewage actually backs up into your home, lawn, neigh

borhood and streets. Not only does this nasty mess cause health issues, it can also run into a nearby stream or river which affects our drinking water.

This is one of the most common problems that we encounter on a weekly and/or daily basis at our lift stations. Flushable wipes will wrap around the cord of the float in the lift station as seen in the picture. That then causes the float to malfunction. Depending on the float, the pump will not turn on causing sewage to back up in the main or the pump will not shut off causing severe damage to the pumps.

Did you know the increasingly popular “flushable” bathroom wipes have been causing sewer problems across America for several years now? They are often advertised and labeled as "Flushable", but shouldn’t be going down your toilets at all. These wipes are not breaking down and are causing the city thousands of dollars a year from clogged sewer mains, pump failure, sewage lift station malfunctions and service calls from lateral lines backed up.

Pouring any kind of used cooking oil or grease down your drain can be a costly mistake. Once the used cooking oil or grease hardens in your sewage pipes or the cities sewer main it can cause sewage to backup in your house and/or your neighbors house. There are a few simple ways to discard your used cooking oil or grease after it cools.
1. Save used glass, tin or plastic containers for placing used oil or grease in
2. Wipe excess oil or grease from pans with a paper towel
before washing
3. Once the grease hardens in a pan you can use a spatula to scrape the grease out into your trash
4. Most cooking oil can be strained and reused
