Prevention remains Lake Tahoe's best protection against invasive golden mussels, and everyone has a role to play.

Since the initial discovery of golden mussels in central California, these harmful mollusks have invaded waters as far south as San Diego. But there is good news: with the help of boaters and paddlers, golden mussels won't spread beyond the California Water Project.

Watercraft are the primary transporters of aquatic invasive species (AIS), but this can be prevented by inspection, decontamination, and boater vigilance. Boaters and beachgoers are encouraged to follow Clean, Drain, Dry protocol to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invaders.

Edit** 4/10/26** someone messaged us saying this is likely the Hybrid 'wiper' due to staggered line patterns. The wipers are in Lake Lahontan, and are considered to be sterile. Shoutout to Smoky Mcfisherman on the ID.

The nearest known source populations of white bass to the Truckee river watershed are at Washoe Lake, which is hydrologically connected to the Truckee river via Steamboat Creek. Although the connection exists, fish-transfer is somewhat limited between these waterbodies due to interrupted connectivity and man made barriers. It is possible during particularly high water years that this warm water species could make it from Washoe lake to the Truckee river, then down to Pyramid Lake but it is not something that can happen year-round, or even every year.

Red-eared sliders have been present throughout the Truckee Meadows since at least the 90's and can be found at most, if not all urban ponds throughout the Reno/Sparks area. The only turtle species that is native to the region is the Western Pond Turtle which has no confirmed sightings in the last few decades.

The good news is that only 1 member of each species has been spotted, and this is not yet considered an "infestation". More surveys need to be conducted, to confirm the presence/absence of more individuals.

Thanks and have a great day!
