🚨 IMPORTANT PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨
Pyramid Lake Fire Rescue EMS Service Interruptions - January 2025
To Our Community Members:
We want to inform you about upcoming temporary service adjustments at Pyramid Lake Fire Rescue EMS. Due to recent tribal budget constraints, our station will experience scheduled "brown outs" - periods when no staff will be on duty at our main location.
January Service Interruptions:
• Friday, January 10 and Saturday, January 11
• Friday, January 24 and Saturday, January 25
What This Means For You:
In case of emergency during these dates, please continue to call 911. Emergency response will still be available through our Gerlach unit on these dates, though response times may be longer than usual. For situations requiring immediate attention, the closest available ambulance or fire truck will be dispatched alongside our Gerlach unit whose funding is provided for by the contract with Washoe County. The Tribal Council has ended this contract and so this resource will become unavailable in 6 months time. A public safety announcement will follow prior to that period ending.
We remain committed to providing emergency services to our community and appreciate your understanding as we work through these operational adjustments. This notification is part of our ongoing commitment to transparency, as requested by community members at our January 3rd Council Meeting.

Volunteer Firefighters Wanted.

The PLFR/EMS is actively seeking interested persons to become Volunteer Firefighters. Come out and serve the Pyramid Lake communities by becoming an active Volunteer Firefighter/EMT.

The PLFR/EMS will train you and get you certified for Structural Firefighting, Wildland Firefighting, Search & Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services. There is no cost to you for Training and Personal Protective Equipment, all you need is a commitment to help your family and friends within your community.

On Friday evening around 5:15pm Pyramid Lake Gerlach Fire Station 83 was dispatched to the report of a structure fire in Gerlach. Crews arrived within minutes to find smoke showing from the rear of the house and coming from the eves. Assistance was requested from Station 80 in Nixon while North Lyon Fire provided ALS coverage for us. Crews attempted to make entry into the house and due to the fires condition, crews were not able to make entry and transitioned to a defensive strategy. Once the fire was extinguished, the home was deemed a total loss. Thank you to our volunteers who responded and assisted and provided much need support during the fire. The cause of the fire was investigated by our agency investigator and it was determined to be caused by natural causes.

This weeks highs are going to reach or exceed over 100 degrees. It's smart to take care of yourself, family, friends and pets during these crazy days of summer. If you feel overwhelmed from the Heat, it's good to know the difference from Heat Stroke versus Heat Exhaustion and tips to avoid both! Please recreate safely during the excessive heat warnings for this week and in the future.

Last night we had multiple fires started by unsafe use of fireworks. Please use the tips we provide here in this post and Recreate safely at Pyramid Lake! 👍

Fireworks Safety Tips:
If consumer fireworks are legal to buy where you live and you choose to use them, be sure to follow the following safety tips:

-Never allow young children to handle fireworks
-Older children should use them only under close adult supervision
-Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
-Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear
-Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
-Never light them indoors
-Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material
-Never point or throw fireworks at another person
Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting
-Never ignite devices in a container
-Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
-Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water before discarding. DO NOT PLACE THEM STILL HOT INTO THE DUMPSTER, THIS WILL START A FIRE.
-Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire
