Nome Volunteer Fire Department The NVFD excels in the area of search and rescue. There are currently 42 members in the department. They protect over 14 square miles and over 3500 people.

A majority of searches and rescues occur in the winter months with teams of fire department volunteers using snowmobiles. The fire department is always looking for new people who are willing to come and help the community at any opportunity. If you are interested talk to any firefighter around the town, they can give you more information.

Search and Rescue has been initiated for Leanna Apassingok, 47 year old female
Last confirmed leaving Patient Hostel West heading North on Bering Street with an unknown male at 1:00am Saturday, 6/7 morning.

She was wearing a dark blue light jacket and grey sweatpants. She could possibly be carrying a backpack and/or small suitcase.

There was a possible sighting of her sometime Saturday morning at Krier’s Annex, unknown time, 312 West 1st Ave.

We have a positive ID on camera from NSHC to help with potential location information. Dexter left the patient hostel at 6:53 AM heading toward the hospital, then under the skybridge between the main hospital and QCC, and last seen heading North up the trail leading up Gold Hill.

The possible subjects seen on camera on Front Street may not have been Dexter.

NVFD search efforts have covered Gold Hill area yesterday, but efforts are re-focusing on a more detailed search of the area. Citizens are encouraged to help, please check in with NVFD incident command.

There was a reported possible sighting of an individual matching the description with his hood up on security footage yesterday 6/1 at 8:36 am heading west passing the Army National Guard.

We are asking for the public’s help. Please check your property, including under homes, in sheds, connexes, vehicles, or any place someone might seek shelter. Please check your Ring cameras or security footage for signs. Even small clues could make a big difference.

Day 2 of the search for 67-year-old Dexter Irrigoo is now underway. Dexter is a vulnerable adult with dementia who was last seen at 8:20 AM on Sunday morning at the Patient Hostel East, Room #113 here in Nome. He was reported heading west on 6th Avenue and then South on K Street at 8:23am and has not been seen since.

Search efforts on Sunday were extensive. Drones covered a one-mile radius around the hospital and scanned the Icy View area, while ground teams searched areas all the way from the airport to Fort Davis. Crews also conducted a coordinated team walk through town—from N Street to the harbor. Despite these efforts, no new leads have been reported.

Search operations continue today, with helicopters, drones, and additional ground teams being deployed. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department is holding a search briefing at 9:00 AM at the fire hall, and community members who are able to assist are encouraged to show up and help.

Dexter was last seen wearing:
• Blue jeans
• A black jacket with green near the chest
• A green hat
• Black shoes

He is described as:
• 5’4” to 5’5” tall
• Around 130 pounds
• Shoulder-length black and gray hair
• A black mole on the side of his face

We had no new leads or updates as of yesterday’s ground search. Searchers will be meeting at the Firehalll at 9am to plan search efforts for today. Members of the public wishing to assist can meet at this time.

Please keep an eye out and if you haveve any potentially helpful information please call NPD at 443-5262 or NVFD at 443-2310.

UPDATE 6/1 6pm-
Volunteers just left the Firehall to start a ground search beginning at N street and heading west down 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd and 1st Avenue. Members of the public is invited to help along the way.

SAR, NPD and volunteers will be continuing their search on foot. Please do not be alarmed if volunteers are searching around your properties. Additionally there is a search dog assisting, please be mindful when commuting around town.

SAR will be conducting a large ground search from the Patient Hostel East headed Westbound. We ask community members to take a look around your residences, and to not be alerted as volunteers may be searching around your properties. Thank you.

NPD is requesting the community’s assistance in locating 67yo Dexter Irrigoo. He was last seen leaving the East Hostel travelling West on foot towards the Elementary School.

Dexter was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, green hat and black shoes. He's about 5'4/5'5 and 130lbs. Hair is black/grey at shoulder length.

Nome Volunteer Fire Dept Asst. Chief Kevin Knowlton is battling bladder cancer, the 4th most common cancer in males in the U.S. and we want to support him through his treatments.
