Eskimo Walrus Commission

Eskimo Walrus Commission The Eskimo Walrus Commission represents Alaska's coastal walrus hunting communities in the co-management of the Pacific walrus population.

Created in 1978 by Kawerak, Inc. of Nome, the Eskimo Walrus Commission (EWC) is the organization representing Alaska’s coastal walrus hunting communities. Initially formed as a consortium of Native hunters, EWC is a recognized statewide entity working on resource co-management issues, specifically regarding walrus, on behalf of Alaska Natives. Walrus continues to be an essential cultural, natural

and subsistence resource to St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Central Yup’ik, and Iñupiaq communities of Alaska, and is a primary source of food and materials to make handicrafts and artwork from ivory and bone. A cooperative agreement between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the EWC was developed in 1997 to encourage the greater participation of subsistence hunters in conserving and managing walrus stocks. In 1998 a Memorandum of Understanding between the EWC, USFWS, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game was signed allowing for the joint management of the Pacific Walrus Conservation Fund, for which the majority of funds are generated from the sale of raw ivory by the EWC during statewide conferences and events. The EWC continues to work cooperatively with the USFWS in a number of ways, including conducting annual meetings of commission members, collecting harvest data and biological samples, and supporting the self-regulation efforts of walrus-hunting communities.

Walrus Harvest PSA

“In 2004, EWC and the US Fish and Wildlife Service jointly
developed and approved a set of Walrus Harvest Guidelines to ensure hunters un-
derstand proper harvest rules and what portions of a walrus that hunters must take
home and not waste. These guidelines are also available in Inupiaq, St. Lawrence
Island Yupik, Central Yup'ik, and English.”

Since last week, it has been a very mild, cold week; but there are signs of spring. The coming of the Cranes have been notable the past couple days as there has been a bunch of them around. For sea ice, so far it seems to have a steady strong Shorefast Ice around Wales. It looks like there is a lot of open water with the winds predominantly Noth wind this week. Temperature have been single digits to upper 20s all week. Thawing of spring has ceased and come to a halt with these brisk Temperatures and northerly winds, but I noticed more snow bunting birds, sea gulls, and coming of the more recent Cranes which are few notable signs of spring, our Temperatures just needs to ahead of the game. No pictures as the Ice fog has been lingering the past couple of days. Once the fog breaks, I will send some photos. Happy trails to all.
