🚨🧑‍🚒Training Alert 🧑‍🚒🚨

This week’s reserve firefighter training focused on three critical skills:

Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) training – which prepares firefighters to rescue one of their own when things go wrong. In the unpredictable environment of a fire scene, seconds matter. RIC skills ensure that if a firefighter becomes trapped, disoriented, or injured, a dedicated and highly trained team can respond immediately, giving them the best possible chance of survival.

Hose advancement - which is more than moving a hose line—it’s about delivering water to the seat of the fire quickly and efficiently. Proper nozzle control, kink prevention, and coordinated movement allow crews to attack the fire aggressively while maintaining safety. This skill directly impacts how fast a fire is knocked down, reducing damage and protecting lives.

Search and Rescue (S&R) - one of the most vital tasks we perform. Entering smoke-filled, low-visibility environments to locate and remove victims requires disciplined and practiced techniques. Every second spent searching can mean the difference between life and death for those trapped inside.

We are grateful that our reserve firefighters are dedicated to training, professionalism, and commitment to excellence.

Our team recently conducted vertical ventilation training—a critical tactical maneuver designed to rapidly clear heat and smoke from a burning structure. By cutting a strategic opening in the roof, firefighters create a natural chimney effect. This venting action draws heat and dense smoke upward and out, significantly improving interior visibility, lowering temperatures, and allowing attack crews to advance faster while improving survival odds for anyone trapped inside.

In addition to roof ops, crew members trained on a specialized rescue board designed for rapid extrication, ensuring we can move a downed or injured firefighter to safety as quickly and efficiently as possible.

đźš’ Preparing before an emergency happens!

Norfolk Fire & Rescue recently completed a company preplan at the Northeast Community College iHub. Preplans help our crews become familiar with buildings and identify important information before an emergency occurs.

A big thank you to Northeast Community College for working with our firefighters and helping them prepare to better serve our community! 👨‍🚒
