🎉Yesterday, 3 of our newest Firefighters completed their 6-month probationary test. We are proud of each of them! We look forward to what they bring to our team!

This test consists of:
3 written test - Firefighter Knowledge, City Maps, and Rural mapping
3 skills test - Apparatus familiarization, individual firefighter I skills (x6), and a fire-based scenario.

During their 6 months, they work on all of these skills. Additionally, they work on EMS skills that match their level of training, whether a Paramedic or EMT. Those skills are tested and monitored throughout their 6-month probation. They include driving an ambulance, patient packaging, and patient assessments, among many others.

We are grateful for the community support, the support of our elected officials, and our fire department staff who train these individuals to be ready for testing.

We will have a formal swearing-in ceremony in the days to come.

Severe storms remain in the forecast for Saturday, especially during the evening and overnight hours. Damaging winds and flooding will be the primary hazards, but hail and tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

Keep an eye on the forecast, especially if you have outdoor plans.

Last night our NFD team had the privilege of teaming up with Pierce Fire and Rescue to do CPR demos and help wait tables at the Go Red for Women event here in Norfolk. This was a great opportunity to share some tips and pointers with members of the community. CPR is an extremely important link in the chain of survival. It was an honor to be at this event promoting this skill.

Last night, our reserves teamed up with C-shift and Hadar fire to work on rural fire operations. This includes hauling water with tankers, drafting with our pumps, and using brush trucks for grass fire suppression. Rural fires create unique challenges that we need to stay sharp on, as time is of the essence. We are continually working to improve so we are ready for whatever comes our way!
