Fraim designed as a community partnership that gives residents & businesses reason to celebrate & grow Norfolk’s tree canopy. Fraim and is designed as a community partnership that gives residents and businesses a reason to celebrate and grow Norfolk’s tree canopy. The program was inspired by a tree-planting program in Norfolk’s sister city, Kitakyushu, Japan. Trees provide many benefits, including

improving water quality, conserving energy, lowering city temperatures, reducing air pollution, enhancing property values, providing wildlife habitats, facilitating social and educational opportunities, and beautifying the city. In the coming years, Norfolk’s goal is to increase the tree canopy from 33% to 40%, the recommended percentage for cities east of the Mississippi River. Three Ways to Celebrate

Residents and businesses can get involved with Celebrate Trees in three ways:

Donate - Make a donation to the Living Legacy Grove fund, which will be used to plant trees in a designated public park or open space area. Plant a Tree - Celebrate a meaningful event by planting a tree on your own property. View planting instructions and advice. Request a Tree - Contact the City of Norfolk to request a street tree on the city-owned median or curb area in front of your home or business.

Common Name: Basswood | Scientific Name: Tilia americana

American basswood is a stately, wide-spreading tree, 60-80 ft. tall, occasionally growing taller. Conical in its younger form, the crown becomes rounded with age.

Broadly oval leaves sometimes change to yellow in fall but often turn brown and become somewhat unsightly. This deciduoustree tends to sprout at the base, producing a clump of tall trees around what was the original tree.

Flowers are inconspicuous but fragrant. Large tree with long trunk and a dense crown of many small, often drooping branches and large leaves; frequently has two or more trunks, and sprouts in a circle from a stump.

I am a small native tree that grows to about 20’-30’ tall. I have clusters of tiny yellow flowers surrounded by 4 white bracts that are quite striking. My leaves turn beautiful shades of red to purple in the fall so you can enjoy one last splash of color before the winter hits. I belong to one of the few families of trees that has an opposite branching pattern, and my little red fruits (drupes) are loved by many different birds and animals. I have bark that looks like tiny plates, and there are many myths as to how I got my name. Due to my small size, spring and fall show of color, and beautiful form, I would be a fantastic addition to any landscape. However, be aware that I do not like extremely hot or droughty locations. Last but certainly not least, I am quite proud to be the state tree and flower of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Who am I?
