Welcome to the USNS Comfort page, it is intended to provide updated information, photos and The USNS COMFORT started life as a super oil tanker named the SS Rose City in 1976.
By 1987 the ship was bought by the US Navy and converted into the USNS Comfort, the second of two Mercy-Class Hospital Ships. The USNS COMFORT has served in such missions as the Terror attacks on 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the devastating 2010 earthquake that hit Haiti. CAPT Elliott and Command Senior Chief Harlow congratulate LS1(SW) Junior Akosah as the FY-21 Sailor of the Year.
In accordance with the guidance put out by Naval Station Norfolk, we will be operating with mission-essential personnel tomorrow, Friday, January 21.
Mission-essential personnel include oncoming and off-going Command Duty Officers and fire and security watches. All other duty personnel shall muster via phone call with designated leadership within their duty section.
Avoid roads if possible. If you need to be on the road, drive safely and be on the lookout for black ice. Please be safe and reach out if you find yourself in need of anything.

Operation Noble Eagle: The US Navy hospital ship USNS COMFORT on September 14, 2001 en route to Manhattan to provide assistance after the World Trade Center attack. Health care workers onboard treated 561 people for injuries incurred while working at ground zero. Today crew members from USNS COMFORT paid respect to those who lost their lives during these tragic events. You are not forgotten.
