Today in Hampton History
1872 - The Thimble Shoal Lighthouse is lit for the first time. Located in the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay, the lighthouse alerted ships to the dangerous shoals at the mouth of the Hampton Roads harbor.

The 1872 lighthouse replaced the last lightship on the Bay and was nicknamed the “Bug Light” by troops stationed at Fort Monroe. It was quickly rebuilt in 1880 after being destroyed by a fire, and heavily damaged after being rammed in 1891 and 1898.

In 1909, the schooner Malcolm Baxter, Jr. rammed the light, and the collision and resulting fire destroyed the lighthouse and its pile foundation. The present lighthouse, a round caisson structure, was built in 1914. In 1964 it was automated, and it was sold at auction - still operating as an active lighthouse - in 2005.
