Molecule of the Week - American Chemical Society

The ACS Molecule of the Week:
MOTW has been a popular feature on this site since 2001. Many molecules are suggested by our website visitors. Every structure is reviewed by a scientist and displayed in 3-D and flat images with a brief description.
Today's molecule is carvone a monoterpene that exists in nature as two enantiomers: (R)-carvone [aka (–)-carvone, L-carvone] and (S)-carvone [aka (+)-carvone, D-carvone].

Both enantiomers have well-recognized flavors and aromas. (R)-carvone has the flavor and aroma of mint; it is the dominant compound in spearmint oil. Like (R)-limonene, (S)-carvone1 is a key component of caraway and dill seed oils.

ACS's Molecule of the Week showcases a different molecule each week with images and a description. Learn the latest MOTW and browse the archive.

Introducing Dr Astha Pokhrel, who is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Brian K. Coombes lab, department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University, Canada. My research aims to characterize the genetic basis of Adherent Invasive E. coli (AIEC) biogeography along the length of the host gastrointestinal tract. AIEC is a pathovar associated with Chron's disease and has biological and phenotypical traits that distinguish it from commensal E. coli. Furthermore, my research also aims to characterize AIEC population at distinct microenvironments within the transmural thickness of the gut at the transcriptomic level because the pathogenic significance of AIEC colonization in different niches remains unknown. In the Coombes lab, I am directly working with animal models of infection and having a great time learning new techniques. On a personal note, I am also enjoying living in a new country. As I am originally from Nepal and a foodie at heart, I frequently visit Toronto where there's a plethora of Tibetan and Nepalese restaurants.

Undergraduate Alumni Success: Celebrating Ms. Nicole Lee, class of 2014. Nicole is a Navy veteran who graduated from ODU the spring of 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. While pursuing her bachelor’s she was an active member of the American Chemical Society student organization and participated in undergraduate research under the advisement of Dr. Lesley Greene. She returned to ODU for graduate school, graduating with a Master’s in Biology in 2017. Ms. Lee is currently a Chemistry teacher for Virginia Beach City Public Schools at Landstown High School. She is entering her fifth year of teaching and enjoys working with students, sharing her life experiences with them and letting them know that “no matter what your plans may be, you will always end up exactly where you are meant to be”. Need we say more? Ms. Lee is a Monarch who believes “It is not what is poured into a student, but what is planted that counts,” E. P. Bertin. Join us in celebrating Ms. Nicole Lee, a Monarch inspiring young minds to be future Monarchs!
