🌐 The Navy marked a major milestone in its effort to protect public health and restore groundwater quality in the Bethpage community with a ribbon‑cutting for the Phase II Groundwater Treatment Plant, part of the Navy’s ongoing Environmental Restoration Program for Former Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant (NWIRP) Bethpage, March 31. This week, the Navy marks two major milestones: the 159th birthday of the Civil Engineer Corps (CEC), established on March 2, 1867, and the 84th birthday of the Seabees, established on March 5, 1942. Since their beginnings, the CEC/Seabee community has supported U.S. forces worldwide through facility maintenance and combat and general engineering capabilities. Their enduring responsibilities to the Navy and Marine Corps – planning, designing, acquiring, constructing, operating, and maintaining shore facilities, as well as building and repairing infrastructure for combat units – continue to enhance mobility and survivability in support of the mission ... Happy Birthday to the CEC and Navy Seabees!

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is offering week-long summer STEM/Engineering & Construction Camps at six different locations, open to eligible high school students! Led by industry professionals and other volunteers from the military and engineering community, the SAME Camps Program focuses on hands-on, project-based learning that provides students with opportunities to begin exploring the STEM fields. LCDR Male!

Introducing our next 2026 FEYA finalist: LCDR Benjamin R. Male, P.E., C.E.M., Public Works Officer with the United States Navy at Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Mid-Atlantic.

At Naval Weapons Station Earle, Benjamin leads a team of 100 military and civilian personnel managing construction, acquisition, and sustainment for a 2.9-mile pier complex, 670 facilities, 85 miles of certified federal railroad, and a 12,000-acre footprint with a planned replacement value of $4.7 billion. His leadership ensures infrastructure readiness and modernization to support evolving mission requirements.

Benjamin holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern Maine and a master’s in civil and environmental engineering from MIT.
