Since 1981, the Foodbank, a member of Feeding America™ and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, has been providing food for hungry people throughout Southeastern Virginia and on the Eastern Shore. In our mission to lead the effort to eliminate hunger in our community, the Foodbank has distributed over 272 million pounds of food equating to over 226.8 million meals throughout our 4,745 square mil

e service area, which includes the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Franklin and Virginia Beach as well as the counties of Southampton, Northampton, Sussex, Isle of Wight and Accomack. During the 2013-2014 fiscal year, the Foodbank distributed over 18.6 million pounds of food equating to over 15.5 million meals to the community.

First graders from Norfolk Christian Schools stopped by the Foodbank to not only learn how a food bank works, but to also prepare emergency bags for our neighbors in need! The students were very engaged throughout their time here, asking thoughtful questions and reflecting on classroom readings that coincided with what they saw today. Through our Retail Rescue program, the Foodbank is able to rescue millions of pounds of food a year that would otherwise go to waste. When large retailers have surplus food, the Foodbank swoops in to grab the perfectly safe-to-eat food and distributes it to our Partner Agencies. With the help of these retailers, this year alone, we rescued 9.4 million pounds of food! April is Volunteer Appreciation Month! This month, join us in recognizing our incredible volunteers for their dedicated support in the fight against hunger. Whether it's sorting through donations, harvesting corn, packing BackPacks, loading up cars at a Mobile Pantry, or any number of our other volunteer activities, we are immensely grateful for our volunteers. We simply could not feed the amount of people we do without their help. While many see the Eastern Shore as a idyllic, quiet stretch of land, for some of our neighbors living here, access to nutritious food can be an immense struggle. 14.3% of our neighbors in Northampton county are food insecure with 26.4% of children facing hunger every day. Aware of and committed to overcoming these challenges, the Foodbank has invested in greatly expanding our Mobile Pantry program on the Eastern Shore. Last Friday marked the first of many volunteer shifts from members of FACT Families of Autism Coming Together, as the Foodbank begins a new monthly volunteer initiative thanks to a partnership with Sentara Health. The initiative sees volunteers from FACT and Sentara working on essential tasks such as sorting donations, packing BackPacks, and bagging produce, while they build confidence, develop job skills, and contribute meaningfully to hunger relief efforts. Thank you for your hard work, volunteers, and thank you, Sentara, for your dedication to fostering inclusive opportunities and supporting our community!

Hubs Virginia Peanuts single origin peanuts are back! 🥜 You can now visit https://ow.ly/4wrJ50VjQMh and get your hands on the delicious and highly sought-after peanuts. These nuts were planted by Foodbank friend and farmer, Elisha Barnes, back in early fall. Then, they were harvested by our amazing volunteers! The result is ready for you to try. And for each can sold, one dollar goes to the Foodbank!

Additionally, we would like to congratulate Hubs for being named the 2024 winner of Garden & Gun Magazine's Made in the South Sustainability Award for this project!

We’re getting ready for our next peanut shocking at Izzie’s Field, and we need your help! 🥜🚜🌾 This harvest is part of an ongoing partnership with Elisha Barnes, a fourth-generation farmer dedicated to preserving the time-honored practice of shocking peanuts. In collaboration with the Hubs Virginia Peanuts, this limited-edition “single origin” peanut crop is grown with care on Izzie’s Field. A portion of every can sold from this special crop helps provide two meals to neighbors experiencing hunger, so each harvest and every volunteer hour contributes directly to our fight against food insecurity. That’s where you come in! 🧡 We are seeking volunteers to join us for this Wednesday, October 9, through Friday, October 11, with two daily opportunities available from 8:00-11:00am and 10:00am-1:00pm. This a unique opportunity to preserve tradition, connect with the land, and support our neighbors in need.
