In September, 1998 a group of parents and staff from Health and Human Resources met to prepare a grant to fund Parent to Parent Network. Through these efforts a grant application was submitted and accepted for the development of a family organiza

tion in Region IV. In May of 2000, Parent to Parent Network received their 501(c)3 status and became incorporated as a non-profit organization. Since then, Parent to Parent has expanded their staff to include an Executive Director, Family Coordinator, Family Care Partners and a Wrap Fidelity Index Evaluator. Parent to Parent Network is a non-profit organization created by and for families that reside in Northeast Nebraska and who are raising, or are primary caregivers for, children with behavioral/emotional challenges including social, emotional, mental, substance abuse and gambling. Vision
We believe children and their families can be successful and families/caregivers are the experts on their children’s needs and should be the main-decision-makers for their children. We understand the struggles and barriersn that parents face when accessing services and supports for their children in schools, the “system” and in their own communities because we too, have children with unique needs. We understand the importance of being able to talk to a nonjudgmental person who understands the challenges we face at home, with schools and in the community. We are dedicated to strengthening and empowering families by providing access to resources, support, advocacy and education.

The bottom line is we need to instill a love of learning in our little learners. If they never stop learning, they will never stop improving.

Let your children experience life. Let them experience the negatives with the positives. Protecting them, when done in moderation, is a good thing, but making it so they never experience negative consequences will only produce entitled and immature adults. We're seeing that today with the millennial generation. Let's make the next generation better.

Like we've discussed, encouragement is key to the successful rearing of children. That isn't to say that we shouldn't let them experience negative consequences where merited. Just be sure to encourage them to do better.

I am a firm believer in nurture being stronger than nature. Take the offspring of the most violent person who ever lived, but put them into a caring and kind environment, and they will likely turn out to be more kind and caring than the offspring of the nicest person you know who is put in a neglectful and uncaring environment. There are outliers, of course, but they are the exception and not the rule.
Bottom line is, be kind, compassionate, and pass these values down to your children.

No matter where you are, learning can happen there. Whether you are at the store picking up groceries, at the library picking out a book, or at a restaurant waiting for your meal. You can teach them numbers, how to pick the best prices, or even the different types of books/stories that exist. What sort of lessons can you impart and where?

It is our job to build the next generation so that it improves the world of the future. The ages of 3, 7, and 11 are debatably the most crucial. At 3, a child really forms their personality. At 7, they start to form their independence or lack-there-of. At 11, they form their ideas about the world around them. Maybe it's just pseudoscience, but I believe this is very accurate.

Encourage independence at as early an age as possible. Start with instructing them to pick up their toys when they are done playing with them. Move from that to teaching them basic household chores like sweeping, mopping, doing the dishes, and eventually laundry (or at least how to keep dirty laundry in the basket). Independence is one of the most important things we can impart on our children.

It may hurt sometimes, but we have to remember that we are their parents first and their friends second. Sometimes, to be a good parent, you have to show your child what it is like to not be totally comfortable, in an appropriate manner. That means telling them 'No' when it is necessary to do so. That means withholding a treat when they didn't earn it. That means letting them know when they made a mistake and showing them that mistakes bring consequences. That isn't to say that you can't be encouraging, however...
