Restoring Claytor Lake: Hurricane Helene Response
#USACE is hard at work, clearing debris from Claytor Lake after #hurricanehelene ‘s devastating impact. This vital mission is about more than just cleanup; it’s about protecting hydropower infrastructure, safeguarding water quality, and helping the community recover.
Since the vessel launch nearly 3.5 weeks ago, approximately 12k cubic yards of debris material have been removed from the lake (that’s 3,500 tons!).
Hear from our team on the ground about the challenges, progress, and unwavering commitment to getting the job done safely.
Stay safe on the water: Make sure to keep at least 200 yards away from debris recovery operations and follow all safety guidelines.

Deep Creek Bridge Replacement Project Update: Progress and New Traffic Pattern to Come
WATCH: Here we are with another update, showing where we are with the Deep Creek Bridge Replacement Project! #USACE will begin implementing a new traffic pattern on the eastbound side of the #DeepCreekBridge (Moses Grandy Trail, near George Washington Highway) in City of Chesapeake, Virginia, starting Friday, November 1, 2024.
To safely establish this new pattern and temporary pavement markings, USACE’s contractor will conduct overnight lane closures on Moses Grandy Trail, near George Washington Highway South, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. One lane will remain open in each direction during the day, ensuring continued traffic flow while we work to improve this vital infrastructure.
#Safety remains our top priority as we progress with this project. USACE is dedicated to minimizing impacts on local traffic while ensuring a safe environment for both #engineers and the community. Please follow all posted signage and stay cautious while driving through the area. Thanks for your patience as we work to bring you a better, safer bridge!
Debris management in action at Claytor Lake!!!
As part of the ongoing partnered response to Hurricane Helene, #USACE #engineers are tackling debris removal, the primary mission here at Claytor Lake. Today, the team launched tugboats and modular barges into the water using a 142-foot crane and made their first debris scoops. Each tugboat pushes a barge carrying an excavator or roll-off container to collect debris. After collection, debris is sorted into categories: green waste, construction materials, general trash, and hazardous materials, and then transported for disposal.
