Commitment, Communication and Collaboration
In this video, a team of professionals from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) meets with the Senator Bill DeSteph, the Broad Bay Civic League, and Virginia Beach City Government to discuss plans to construct an artificial oyster reef in Broad Bay and reassure the league's local residents that their recent concerns had indeed been heard.
The discussion took place aboard a #USACE survey vessel, which allowed for real-time scanning of the proposed site. The Phase II reef construction comes as part of the #LynnhavenRiverBasinEcosystemRestoration project, which aims to improve the overall health of the #LynnhavenRiver and the #ChesapeakeBay.

WATCH:
Over the last few decades, the water quality of the Lynnhaven River has been impaired to such an extent that oysters and other fish harvested from the estuary have at times not been fit for human consumption. However, through the sustained collaborative efforts of Virginia Beach City Government leadership, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other local organizations, continued improvement is underway.
In this video, Kathy Perdue explains the wetland restoration efforts of the Lynnhaven River Basin Ecosystem Restoration Project in Thalia Creek and how they work to improve the overall health of the Lynnhaven River and Chesapeake Bay.
WATCH: Beneficial Uses of Dredged Material - Sometimes it's for the Birds
Every year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) harvests enormous amounts of dredged sediment from federal waterways while working to make them as safe as possible for navigating vessels. ON TOP OF THAT, the corps then routinely takes this material and uses it for beneficial purposes such as wetland habitat enhancement and beach nourishment.
In this video, you will see Deputy Director for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources Becky Gwynn conduct bird tagging at Fort Wool as she explains how the collaborative efforts between her organization and USACE support the size and strength of special bird populations in the Chesapeake Bay area.
For more background information about the location and project mentioned in this release, please refer to the video in the link below, which highlights the details of how it all began.

Of the nearly 200 million cubic yards of dredged material pulled each year from the water, about 85% of it becomes available for beneficial use.

Andrew Willey, a forester with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District, discusses some of the less than obvious aspects of forest management with natural resource specialist Alicia Palmer and forester Glenn Werner from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District as they take a tour of the Raystown Lake forest management sites to check progress.
Forest management differs from de-forestation in that the latter refers to the permanent removal (burning and cutting) of forest stands. In this video, these professionals show how forest management focuses on young forest growth, promotes tree species diversity and monitors the impact of this process on local wildlife.
