POLICIES & TIME-SAVING TIPS
•Walk-in policy: Head-of-line priority is given to deploying personnel. Active-duty (AD) service members and AD dependents are then served on a first-come, first-served walk-in basis up to the number of slots available. Our capacity to serve walk-in clients seeking attorney services will be limited on days when our team is serving deployers off-site.
•Deploying command will visits: Deploying commands with 20+ service members needing wills may request services at their command by emailing [email protected]. Will visits have two parts. First, attorneys meet with Sailors to discuss their estate plan needs/desires. Attorneys draft the documents and return a few weeks later to execute the documents (e.g., wills, trusts for minor children, living wills).
•Bring two (2) forms of current ID. Military, dependent, or retiree ID card, AND state ID, driver’s license, or passport.
•Complete will paperwork before arrival: Will drafting consultations require a completed questionnaire that can be found at:http://www.jag.navy.mil/legal_services/documents/WillWorksheet.pdf
•Bring all related paperwork with you (e.g., leases, court orders, emails from other parties).
•Attorney services include wills, family law, landlord tenant law, naturalization advice, consumer law, and victim support.
•Power of attorney drafting & notarization options: Option 1 (Self-help: you draft online, print, and bring unsigned documents to notary of your choice):Customers go to
http://www.jag.navy.mil/legal_services/SPOA.htm to (1) draft the documents and(2)bring the documents to qualified notaries—located at the service member’s command, civilian notaries (e.g., a local bank), or at one of the offices listed above.
Option 2 (Office visit): Walk into one of the offices above which will draft & execute the documents.
•Videos on family law and wills at: http://www.jag.navy.mil/legal_services/rlso/rlso_mid_atlantic.htm
•Not permitted in the attorney spaces: Children (unless the child is the client), pets, and weapons (e.g.,pocket knives). Supervised children are welcome in our waiting rooms while client meets with an attorney.
