phibious assault ships and is the tenth warship to carry the name WASP. WASP’s primary mission is to support U.S. Marines in combat and also to provide disaster relief and medical support to those in need. WASP has a crew of nearly 1,000 Sailors and is capable of embarking over 1,600 Marines along with all their equipment and supplies needed for combat action and sustainment. Her impressive command/control suite, flight deck, well deck, and medical capabilities give the nation a powerful crisis response option when the need arises. WASP is an 844 foot, 41,000 ton warship that employs 31 aircraft and multiple high speed landing craft. She was built in Pascagoula, Mississippi and commissioned in 1989. She is equipped with multiple layers of sensors and weapon systems.
