Birth defects can happen for many reasons. Although not all birth defects can be prevented, people can increase their chances of having a healthy baby by managing health conditions and adopting healthy behaviors before becoming pregnant.
January is National Birth Defects Awareness Month. The Norfolk Health Department will be closing at 12:00pm noon on Wednesday, November 23 in observance of Thanksgiving. NDPH will be closed on Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25. NDPH will reopen on Monday, November 28 at normal business hours.

This week is World Immunization Week, which aims to highlight the collective action needed and to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. The 2022 theme “Long Life for All” aims to unify people around the idea that vaccines make it possible for us to follow our dreams, protect our loved ones and live a long, healthy life.
Environmental Health (EH) is the branch of public health that focuses on the interrelationship between people and their environment. EH workers engage in a variety of regulatory and educational programs aimed at reducing chemical and other environmental exposures in air, water, soil, and food to protect people and provide communities with healthier environments. Every day, EH staff work to protect the health of Norfolk's residents and visitors via inspections of restaurants, hotels, tattoo parlors, barber and beauty salons, and other permitted establishments. EH workers also investigate environmental complaints and play a key role in the control of rabies and mosquito-borne disease.
The Administrative Team at the Norfolk Department of Public Health provides internal and external support for all of our services. The work of our Purchasing & Logistics, Finance, Human Resources, and IT offices allows our entire department to work towards the overall mission of the organization. Often our front line administrative staff are the face of the department for the public. Our Clinical Admin Team and Vital Records staff work directly with clients to ensure that they receive the treatment and documents that they need. NDPH is very proud and thankful for our hardworking team!

The Norfolk Department of Health will hold a Free COVID-19 vaccination clinic twice a week at the Norfolk Military Circle Mall (880 N. Military Hwy.) site starting Tuesday, April 5. Tuesday hours are 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walk-ins only. There are no appointments.
