Thirty years ago, Harry Lester helped launch CIVIC as a member of the inaugural class. Nearly two decades later, his son, Whitney, followed in his footsteps and became a CIVIC alumnus. In honor of Father’s Day, and as part of our 30th anniversary celebration, we’re highlighting a father-son duo whose CIVIC experiences demonstrate the lasting impact of leadership across generations.

Please welcome the newest member of the CIVIC team, Melanie Alexander! She will serve as our intern throughout the summer semester of 2026.

Melanie Alexander is a junior at Old Dominion University majoring in Strategic Communications & Journalism. With experience in content creation, event coordination, and digital advertising, she has developed strengths in research, creative design, and social media management. Through involvement with the YMCA, she has expanded her leadership presence with contributions to community service events organized by the youth volunteer club. As a CIVIC Intern, Melanie is refining her communication skills by building relationships with leadership mentors and participating in professional development opportunities. She is interested in pursuing full-time careers in journalism and social media marketing following graduation in spring 2028.

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 | 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝟬 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗖 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲

From pineapples (???) and 5Ks to military ship tours and the "Best Class Ever", CIVIC has never been short on memorable experiences. Looking back across 30 years, some photos capture the big program moments, and others leave us with a few questions.
