Punching well above her weight class 🥊🔔 ‼️USS PORTER takes second place in the 2026 Best of the Mess competition! This event, which included much larger sea and shore commands, pits galley against galley to see who has the skills to be named “Best of the Mess”

On Friday, December 5th, USS PORTER had the privilege of holding a Change of Command ceremony at Mariner Skills Training Command, Atlantic. This ceremony is steeped in tradition, and provides the crew the opportunity to take part in an event that has gone on unbroken in the United States Navy’s 250 years of service.

In the presence Vice Admiral (Ret.) Cullom and Captain Carmichael, Commanding Officer of Naval Surface Group Middle Atlantic, Commander Cameron Burnette was relieved by Commander Andrew Dietzel as the Commanding Officer of USS PORTER (DDG 78). CDR Burnette has served onboard PORTER as her Executive Officer and Commanding Officer for three years with the highest distinction. Freedom’s Champion could not be more proud to have had him as CO, and congratulates CDR Burnette on a job well done. Fair winds and following seas, and, as always, FIGHT ON CHAMPION!

ENS McHargue commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer after serving 12 years as an Interior Communications Electrician.
