WRAL has falsely portrayed the camera system that is providing extra security for our local businesses in our community, Norlina Police Department is not utilizing any facial recognition software in any way shape or form. The cameras has many features which are standard on most updated systems in public use. Norlina Police Department is unsure of the motivation for this misleading information, our local media has reported on this camera implementation over the past year due to coronavirus and shortage of Police Officers. Every camera that is installed are in business areas and only view areas with no legal expectation of privacy. Norlina Police Department shall uphold the constitution and the integrity of protecting and serving the community. These cameras has been installed for the past 6 months and has assisted in recovering stolen property without using any facial recognition software. Norlina Police Department has given full transparency from the beginning to now and will continue to do so, and through the misleading information from WRAL it is very important that our citizens are aware of the reality of what’s being implemented rather than the unknown agenda of the media who are not our neighbors.
