Well THAT stinks! Nicor Gas has informed us that they have had a release of the concentrated odorant chemical that is added to natural gas to give it the distinctive rotten egg smell. The smell is more prevalent north of Normal, between Normal and Lake Bloomington Road and into parts of Woodford County.

There is no cause for alarm, the chemical is not harmful and there is no natural gas being released. Unfortunately, it stinks. You may wish to close windows or turn off fresh air intakes on air conditioners until the smell dissipates, or you may just like to sit and enjoy the smell, and that's OK... a little weird, but OK.

Either way, it's not harmful and we wanted to let you know.

Normal Fire has alerted us of a natural gas release near Pipeline Road. Both Nicor and Normal Fire are aware of this. Keep windows closed if you are in the area.

A solitary hunter, the fire hydrant waits patiently among the tall grass for its prey.

The fire hydrant is a remarkably adaptable creature. It has learned to remain motionless for months at a time, relying on its natural camouflage to avoid detection. Although brightly colored, the ability of a hydrant to blend in and disappear in the foliage is quite remarkable.

But beneath that rust-resistant exterior lies a vital purpose.

When the alarm sounds, firefighters need to find this elusive creature quickly. Tall grass, weeds, landscaping and other vegetation can make a hydrant difficult to spot, especially when seconds matter.

Please keep grass, weeds, landscaping and other obstructions trimmed back so firefighters can quickly locate and connect to hydrants during an emergency!
