Many local schools start their first day today. 🎒 Please take the extra time, drive with care, and stay alert!

With today being the first day of school for many local schools, we felt a little math would be appropriate.
Please follow along:
The average school zone in Normal is 1,200 feet.
The normal speed limit is 30mph.
The school zone speed limit is 20mph.
At 30 mph you are traveling approximately 44 feet per second.
At 20 mph you are traveling approximately 30 feet per second.
The difference between 30 mph and 20 mph in traveling through a school zone that is 1,200 feet long is 13 additional SECONDS. Please SLOW DOWN and obey the posted school zone speed limit. The parents, teachers and kiddos will appreciate it.

After a difficult week, it’s rewarding to see campus full of life again. Friends are back together, new faces are arriving, and there’s that first-day-of-class energy in the air.

Overnight, the National Weather Service issued emergency alerts for widespread flash flooding in Bloomington-Normal and surrounding communities. The current Flash Flood Warning from NWS has been extended through 1:30pm on Saturday.

We are grateful that Illinois State’s campus weathered this storm, and Illinois State employees continue to work 24/7 to care for our Redbirds and facilities.

If you are impacted by flooding, remain where you are if it is safe to do so. Never drive through flooded roadways or around barricades. Because flash flooding can change road conditions quickly, we cannot provide a reliable map of impacted roads. If you are traveling to campus, please use caution and be prepared to change your route.

Move-In is ongoing and activities are happening across campus. ISU Police will be present to assist students and families. We also continue to respond to storm impacts and support cleanup efforts across campus. Help us help you: Please give clean up crews space to work and avoid barricades, safety tape, and follow the directions of public safety.

The Illinois State campus is operating and continuing clean-up following yesterday’s storm. Numerous trees are down on the Quad, please avoid this area if possible. Much of the surrounding community remains without power. We recognize this is difficult for many students living off campus. The Bone Student Center, Redbird Game Complex, Student Fitness Center, Milner Library, and dining centers are open today. Phone charger stations are available in the Bone Student Center. As the temperatures warm up today and tomorrow, please be reminded that on-campus spaces are air-conditioned and available to students during regular business hours.

For students moving into residence halls, Move-In is underway. Staff and volunteers are ready to assist. For students who missed their appointment time on Thursday, August 13, you may arrive any time today; no appointment is needed. Questions regarding Move-In should be directed to University Housing Services at (309) 438-8611. Housing is located in the Office of Residential Life building (ORL) and will be open over the weekend, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. If you are currently in an on-campus residence hall or apartment and need assistance with building-related questions, please contact your residence hall front desk:

ISU Emergency Alert: Power has been restored to the Illinois State University campus. For your safety, please use caution on campus as damage assessment and cleanup efforts are ongoing.

The majority of campus facilities remain closed this evening. All evening activities for Thursday, August 13, are cancelled. Welcome Week activities may be modified on Friday. Please visit the Welcome Week website for updated information.

Housing Move-In will resume on Friday, August 14, at 8 a.m., as scheduled. There are insufficient resources available to continue with Move-In this evening. Students who missed Move-In appointments on Thursday, August 13, may move in after 8 a.m. on Friday. Please visit Dining.IllinoisState.edu/locations for updates on dining closures and hours.

Now that operations have resumed, second-shift Building Service Workers should report to work this evening at 7:30 p.m. or at their regularly scheduled time, whichever is later. All other employees should report to work as scheduled.

If facility issues are identified, please report them to Facilities Services at 309-438-5656.

ISU Emergency Alert: The Illinois State campus continues to be without power. The University is in contact with Ameren, and crews are actively assessing the situation. At this time, there is no estimate for when power will be restored. Additionally, the University’s Damage Assessment Team is surveying the campus. Reports from this team will help the University determine next steps.

The safety of our campus community remains our top priority. At this time, Move-In has been suspended. Please do not travel to campus until further notice. Our staff are actively evaluating conditions, responding to reported concerns, and working to ensure that residence halls and surrounding areas are safe.

Student Health Services will close at 5:15 p.m. If you have an emergency or need emergent care, OSF OnCall Urgent Care located at 211 Greenbriar Dr. and 1730 Bradford Dr., both in Normal, are open until 8 p.m. The Carle BroMenn Emergency Room is also accepting patients.

Third shift Building Service Workers should contact supervisors before reporting to work.
