The Direct Democracy Project: First meeting

When? May 1st (following the immigrant march) 6:30pm
Where? Wither’s Park in Bloomington (202 E. Washington St.)
Why?
The Direct Democracy Project is a grassroots movement that utilizes non-violent direct action to address the various injustices we face in our local community (Bloomington-Normal, IL).

Our goals include:
(1) using our power and numbers to create a more just and sustainable society for all
(2) providing tools and training opportunities that will empower community members to organize, and
(3) building a forum in our community that encourages people to participate in the process of direct democracy

GA Minutes Tuesday Jan. 24, 2012

- Announcements- Feb 2 @ 2pm Jenn Carrillo will be teaching a class in the basement of The Coffeehouse on civil disobedience and land liberation.-

- Camp Revamp- Participation has been low possibly because our fellow 99 may be intimidated by the idea of camping through winter. We try to stress that physical occupation isn’t the only way to participate, but many of us are feeling guilty for letting the few hold down the site alone. Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, it has been decided that it is time to tear down the camp until it warms up in the spring. But this does not mean that we will stop our GAs, working groups or direct actions. It has also been decided that we must make it clear that the occupation is not leaving. Therefore we will leave a tent/structure/symbol, a large declaration and a message board with GA info at the site.

The question has been raised of where everything will go. What we can use in spring we will store… somewhere. Many of our vast excess of blankets will be donated to homeless shelters, and everything else, if not claimed before Feb. 4th, will go to the Really Free Market.

-Revamp/Reconnect PAR-TAY!- Time to kick-off Occupy 2012, and there’s no better way to reconnect with our Occu-fam than to throw a party. Pizza, hot chocolate and perhaps some jams (calling all musicians) will make packing our things away way more fun. Tentative time is Feb. 4th at 1pm, warmest time of the day (weather check day TBD)

*Consensus – we stand on a platform of “Money out of politics.” All of our other issues stem from this idea. Elections are coming up and local and national candidates have already begun fundraising and will continue until the last vote is counted. Come to this party excited and with ideas. Once camp is packed up, we can go warm up and discuss future actions, working groups, SOPA/PIPA, NDAA, campaign fundraising/superpacs, everything else that has been nagging at us over winter break.

There will be a GA next Tuesday- 5:30 at the Chess Café in Downtown Bloomington. We need a GA before the next. Day is yet to be determined (If you build it, they will come).

H.R. 3166, the Enemy Expatriation Act, allows the government to strip someone's US citizenship without the approval of any judge or court, so long as they are accused of engaging or purposefully and materially supporting hostilites against the US. They key is how this language is interpreted by those who officially accuse people of committing these acts.

Stay informed and remain vigilant.

-RL

Congress is considering H. R. 3166 also known as the Enemy Expatriation Act. This bill would give the US government the power to strip Americans of their citizenship without being convicted of being 'hostile' against the United States.
