Cleveland Co. Conservation District Helping People Reconnect To Our Environment
www.clevelandcountyconservationdistrict.com

The Cleveland County Conservation District was orginally formed in 1939 as a viable solution for the problems that created the Dust Bowl. In the 1930's Oklahoma's top soil blew across a large portion of the United States due to drought, poor soil management and antiquated farming techniques. Over the last 70 years, we have helped local agricultural producers develop better conservation practices b

y providing them with conservation plans, cost share assistance and technical assistance in cooperation with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. As the local primary unit of State Government responsible for the conservation of natural resources, we have endeavored to be a leader in environmental education and to raise public awareness of important conservation issues. We provide free programs and workshops concerning such topics as recycling, water conservation, energy efficiency, sustainability as well as agriculture conservation issues. We also provide environmental education to schools through the 23 outdoor classrooms that we helped to build in Cleveland County.

You have NO IDEA how many yards I see that I wish would apply to be certified in the Yard By Yard program! I'm often tempted to stop and leave them a note!
What is the program? Well, we recognize our urban citizens for their efforts in putting conservation practices into their gardening. Being chemical free, planning natives, using soil health and water conservation practices and providing for local wildlife. We honor you!! Once you are certified, you receive a sign, ( new signs are metal and smaller!) wildflower seeds and a bag of information from us and other relative organizations.
You are the examples we can point to as we move into a future that sees soil health and water conservation as imperative to our communities.

You don't want to miss this opportunity!!!

The City of Norman’s Division of Environmental Resilience and Sustainability (DoERS) will host a free, two-part compost workshop series this June, offering residents the opportunity to learn both the science and practical application of composting at home.

Participants may register for one or both sessions.

The first workshop, an indoor classroom session, will take place Sunday, June 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Development Center, 225 N Webster Ave. The session will explore the science behind composting. Attendees will also experience a microscope demonstration highlighting the living organisms that help create healthy compost. Those interested in attending should register by June 12.

The second workshop, a hands-on outdoor session, will be held Saturday, June 27 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the LEAF facility, located at 333 Bratcher Miner Road. Participants will learn how to build and maintain compost bins, along with an introduction to vermicomposting, or composting with worms. Those interested in attending should register by June 25.

The workshops will be led by Leif Olson, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Oklahoma under Dr. Robert Nairn. Olson studies microbial communities and adaptations in mine water remediation and brings a multidisciplinary background in ecology, wetlands, soil biology, mycology and bioremediation.

Registration is available online at:

I'm running around the back parts of Noble going to Yard By Yard certifications, and I just love all the wildflowers. They are everywhere, fields, bar ditches and fence lines. I even saw some day lilies in a pasture where I assume an old farm house used to be. I LOVE my job!
