Update 6:18 pm:
The perimeter is secure. There have been no structures lost and no injuries reported from this fire of approximately 48 acres. Those that were evacuated may return to their homes. This will generate smoke and we will have crews keeping an eye on things through the night. Stations have been backfilled with additional personnel and are in service responding to other emergencies.

Update 5:13pm: 2901 - 2937 Coach Ct have been told to evacuate. CrossPointe Church at 2601 24th Ave SE is open for evacuees.

If you are in the immediate area of Coach Ct. please evacuate.
● Move away from the fire area and avoid driving into smoke or the direction of fire spread.
● Do not delay to gather belongings.
● Close all windows and doors as you leave your residence or building.
● Follow directions from fire and law enforcement personnel at all times.
● If you are unable to evacuate safely, shelter in place inside a sturdy building away from exterior walls and windows.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Norman Fire Department is currently responding to a large grass fire in the area of 24th Avenue NE and Robinson Street.

First-arriving fire crews reported a large, fast-moving grass fire traveling from south to north. Due to the fire’s proximity and current conditions, the Norman Water Treatment Plant has been evacuated as a precaution.

Firefighters are actively working to contain the fire and protect nearby property and infrastructure. Additional resources are responding to assist with suppression efforts.

Residents and motorists are strongly urged to avoid the area of 24th Avenue NE and Robinson Street to allow emergency personnel and apparatus unrestricted access.

Please do not enter the affected area or attempt to observe the fire. Additional information will be released as conditions change and verified information becomes available.

We are so incredibly sorry for this tragic loss in our Norman Regional EMSSTAT family. We are here with you and for you, keeping you and her family in our prayers.

It is with a heavy heart we mourn the loss of one of the members of our EMSSTAT family. Jules Curry was an outstanding paramedic, committed co-worker and amazing person. No matter how diverse EMSSTAT may be, the thing that unites us all is the uniform we wear. Now we are united by the pain of knowing that one of us has worn the uniform for the last time.

Our thoughts and support are with her family during this difficult time.

Thank you for spending some time with us at Station 1! This video does a fantastic job of showing some of what folks may not know about the day to day in the fire service.

Fire Station 1 averages over 600 responses per month. These calls can be anything from what you saw in the video to structure fires, major vehicle accidents with all levels of injury, medical calls, downed power lines, water rescue, helping a frightened citizen off the floor of their living room when they just can't manage it themselves or one of many, many other reasons.

After sending one to Texas earlier in the week with OKTF1, NFD again answered the call for help, sending 3 more highly trained personnel and rescue apparatus to Ozona Texas.

Coordinating with OKTF1, Yukon FD and TXTF1, they have conducted multiple missions (All successful with zero casualties). NFD assisted with evacuating an apartment complex that had begun to flood, conducted recon of hazards in the area and performed repairs and maintenance in equipment.

Overnight, one adult male was pulled from swift water via rope bags and tethered swimmers. The patient was treated and released by EMS.

"Lexington WMA will be burning 200-300 acres of just grass around the 144th and York areas on the internal part of the reserve. County has been notified and there will be smoke in the area. No brush burning at this time."

Damage assessment from the overnight storm is ongoing by City staff. All available crews are assessing, assisting or repairing issues at this time. Residents should be aware of the following:

🚦TRAFFIC SIGNALS: Traffic signals at multiple intersections are blacked out. These intersections should be treated as four-way stops until repairs are made.

🚧ROAD CLOSURES: Motorists should slow down and travel with caution. Never drive into downed power lines. As debris is removed from public rights-of-way, local roadways may also be closed.

🪚DEBRIS CLEANUP: The City of Norman is aware of residential concerns regarding debris cleanup. Citywide assessment must be carried out before a debris cleanup plan is formed and shared with the community. Assessment is ongoing. Specific cleanup plans will be shared to Normanok.gov as they are solidified. (Regular, weekly yard waste pickup information can be found at Normanok.gov/YardWaste .)

📍DAMAGE/DEBRIS REPORTING: Call 911 only in life-threatening emergencies. Debris obstructing public spaces can be phoned into non-emergency dispatch at 405-321-1444. Callers should be prepared to experience longer than normal wait times. City crews cannot assist with debris clearing on private property. City crews are actively clearing public rights-of-way.

The State of Oklahoma encourages all property owners to report storm damage at damage.ok.gov.

City crews are working diligently to respond to and prioritize issues across Norman, alongside partner agencies. With the amount of damage observed, there are currently no estimated times of repair to share. Updates will continue to be provided as progress is made at Normanok.gov.

WEATHER ALERT (11:15PM): Power lines and trees are down across Norman. First responders are working to respond to calls as quickly as possible.

Please only use 911 to report emergencies.

Never drive over or through a downed power lines. Avoid travel if possible.

Residents should report power outages directly to their power company.
