Have you ever believed the myth that perfectionism is actually a good thing or that you need it to motivate yourself to achieve your goals? The truth is that perfectionism is not actually helping you achieve; in fact, it's probably holding you back! Perfectionism often causes anxiety, stress, depression, and other feelings that get in the way of your thinking clearly or creatively. It comes with behaviors like procrastination, avoidance, ruthless self-criticism, and overthinking. Remember that you matter and you are more valuable than your achievements or test scores can ever reflect. Instead, try treating yourself with warmth and understanding, especially when things don't go perfectly. That's what real progress looks like: setting realistic goals and working toward them with determination, not perfection.

Alt text for accessibility: The Crushing weight of perfection. A brain strains to hold up a rock that has the words: not good, fail, and be better written across it.

One step towards getting a clear picture of who you are is to look at your values. Values are your guiding lights, the ideas that matter most to you and help you decide how to act. Honesty, compassion, determination, courage, and creativity are examples.

When your actions line up with your values, it can feel like pride — like when you value courage and you speak up for a friend getting picked on. When they don't line up, it feels like guilt — like laughing along with a mean joke when you value kindness.

Understanding your values can help you discover the core of who you are and help you be your realest self. So, go ahead! What are three values that you identify with the most?

The Science of Journaling
Journaling isn't just writing — it's a way to actually understand what's going on in your head and express yourself. Words, doodles, whatever works for you. No rules, no grades. Journaling has real benefits for your mental health! People who journal can manage their stress better and can better understand their own emotions. Writing about our feelings can help with problem-solving and clarity. If you aren’t sure where to start, you can try one of these.
-Copy down lyrics or a quote and write about what it means to you
-Tell the story of a hard thing you got through
-Write about one person or thing that you are grateful for
-Draw how you are feeling. You don’t have to use words to use a journal.
