⚠️ β›ˆοΈπŸŒͺ️ 05/17/26: The LIFT project used LiDAR and mobile mesonets to sample ground-level wind flow on a strong tornado in Nebraska.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”¬ LIFT researchers used skill, experience and carefully planned strategies to safely position their instruments and gather data in close range throughout the tornado's full lifecycle. This type of data on the tornado itself AND its formation at such close range and proximity to ground is rare and valuable. πŸ”¬πŸ₯ΌπŸ“‘

Tornado science doesn't stop when the funnel lifts. πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬πŸŒͺ️

From social science to drones, NSSL teams deploy to communities impacted by tornadoes in search of data. The info we gain from these cases is used to better understand storm intensities and ultimately improve public safety. CIWRO NOAA Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research

🌸πŸͺ»The annual is live! Every year meteorologists, researchers, and forecasters gather inside National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 's Hazardous Weather Testbed to test new technologies and techniques in severe weather forecasting and modeling.

From tornadoes πŸŒͺ️ to hail 🌨 and flash floods 🌊, this is where the next gen of cutting edge weather tools are tested and perfected. This work helps improve the accuracy and lead time of the warnings that keep us safe.

πŸŒͺ️ Can severe weather be predicted 3 weeks in advance? πŸŒͺ️

🌩️ We're testing the limits with The Severe Weather Extended-Range forecasting and Verification Experiment or SWERVE, which wraps up this week. SWERVE explores extended-range forecasting and preliminary results are promising! Consensus forecasts for weeks two and three have shown skill beyond what climatology would predict.
