On this National Video Game Day, we are reflecting on the infamous question of whether or not video gamers really do learn faster when compared to non-gamers. An experiment at Brown University has found a correlation between people who frequently play video games and their ability to retain learning about two quickly learned visual activities. The results suggest that video game playing not only improves player performance, but also builds up the capacity to improve performance.1 Essentially, the results observed from nine frequent gamers and nine non-gamers stated that just as athletes can pick up movements rather quickly, so can video gamers as they pick up visual processing. We should learn to accept this form of technology, and realize that in reasonable doses video games can have constructive and powerful effects on our behaviors and cognitve abilities.

Attached is a link to a Ted Talk from Daphne Bavelier discussing the qualitative research she performed in a lab setting in regards to video games and their impact on the brain. She begins her findings by stating that nine out of every ten young adults consider themselves 'gamers'. With three phases to the lab study, Daphne finds that improvement of vision, attention span, and multi-tasking are all significantly improved for up to five months after lab training has ceased. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FktsFcooIG8

Even the Olympics are considering the addition of E-sports to their 2024 roster in Paris!

Tariffs, or taxes on the imports or exports of other countries, have played a pivotal role in American history. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed by our Founding Fathers, announcing to the world that the United States no longer wished to to be ruled by King George III and Great Britain. This declaration was in response to series of taxes imposed on American colonists by King George III, to replenish his war-torn treasury. The last straw was the Tea Act, which imposed a tax on tea imported to the colonies, designed to give a trade advantage to the East India Tea Company, a British business. These events gave rise to the Boston Tea Party, where colonists snuck onto ships carrying tea, and dumped the tea into the Boston Harbor.

The United States, throughout its history, has used tariffs, or the reduction of tariffs, to reinforce relationships with its allies. On July 4, 1962, 186 years after the Declaration of Independence, President John F. Kennedy gave a speech in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, announcing plans to enter into a trade agreement with European allies. President Kennedy stated that the “United States will be ready for a declaration of interdependence, that we will be prepared to discuss with a united Europe the ways and means of forming a concrete Atlantic partnership, a mutually beneficial partnership, between the new union now emerging in Europe and the old American union.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBM1T5AC_x4. In recent news, the Trump administration has proposed $4 billion in tariffs on the European Union in an effort to rectify trade imbalances.

We are celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act today! On this day, the United States took a significant legislative step towards equal opportunity for all citizens.

Attached is a link to a political add from the campaign of Humphrey-Muskie, which participated in the 1968 presidential election, losing to Nixon. The add focuses on Humphrey's support of civil rights and displays an attitude amongst some Americans following Johnson's recusment from the election that his goal of civil rights advancement would become a party direction for the following years.

After four years with the Political Communication Center, yesterday was the last day of work for our student worker, Kacey. Tomorrow, Kacey is graduating with a B.A. in Japanese. Kacey has been nothing, but a delight to work with. Her bubbly personality and positivity will be missed, but we're certain she's moving onto bigger and better things.
