The 33rd LD Democrats Chair Jackie Boschok Response Regarding our Endorsement of Melissa Chaudhry for Congress

The 33rd LD Democrats Executive Board finds it concerning to hear that 9th CD candidate Melissa Chaudhry has not denied that she would consider changing her political party affiliation after winning as a Democrat with our support. Our By-laws allow us to endorse any candidate who shares our progressive values, and we have done so when a candidate has honestly shared their party position. So, her dishonesty undermines our Democratic Party beliefs.

The more alarming matter is her initial unwillingness to state her support for the LGBTQIA+ community. To support them as a marginalized community, we need leaders who will stand up and actively defend those who are facing daily attacks for being their authentic selves.

Our current 33rd LD Democrats’ By-Laws do not allow us to reverse any approved endorsement motion. Based on this situation and others like Graham Platner of Maine, our Executive Board found it prudent to immediately start the process to allow us to rescind endorsements in the future. A proposed By-Laws amendment to do that was just sent out to our members this evening.

March with the 33rd LD Dems in the Kent Cornucopia Grand Parade

This weekend is the Kent Cornucopia Festival and Sunday, July 12th is the Kent Cornucopia Grand Parade 1:00 PM, along 4th Ave from Willis to James Street. This is a Seafair parade so several floats, Seafair Royalty, the SEAFAIR pirates and clowns and the Seattle All City band will all be there.

We will begin assembling first on Saar Street, just west of 4th at 12 noon and then line up in our parade position at 12:30 pm. The parade begins at 1:00 PM and you can click here for a map of the parade route.

Don’t forget that Meeker Street construction means you need to check if an alternate route is required. For more information, contact Jackie Boschok at 206-890-1009. Hope to see you there!

Can there still be time to save this historic landmark?

You may have seen the recent news out of King County: the historic Masonic Home of Washington in Des Moines has been granted a conditional demolition permit, and the family of the original architect is fighting hard alongside community advocates to save it. Completed in 1926 as a retirement community for Washington’s Masons, this "Landmark on the Sound" is filled with the kind of craftsmanship that simply cannot be replicated today, from hand-carved woodwork and stained glass to gorgeous terrazzo floors and soaring box-beam ceilings. It is a stunning, 108,000-square-foot testament to beauty, permanence, and care.

While it sits just north of us, its story is deeply tied to our city. The architect was Frederick Heath—the legendary Tacoma visionary who gave us Tacoma Armory, the First Church of Christ, and so many others. Stadium High School was also a Heath design, and it serves as the ultimate inspiration for what is possible. Originally planned as a luxury hotel, it was abandoned mid-construction and sat unfinished for years before the school district stepped in, adapted the shell, and turned it into one of the most iconic public schools in the country. That is adaptive reuse at its finest. It proves that even the most challenging historic buildings can find vibrant second lives if a community chooses to invest in them.

Tearing down the Masonic Home isn’t just a heartbreaking cultural loss; it’s a massive environmental setback. We love to remind our neighbors that the greenest building is always the one already built. Once a wrecking ball swings, all of that original embodied energy, irreplaceable craftsmanship, and historic material is lost to a landfill forever.

How you can help: The King5 news highlights the family leading this fight. The most immediate way to support them is to watch and share their story so more people understand what’s at stake.

Heath’s architectural legacy belongs to all of us here in the Pacific Northwest. Let’s not let another masterpiece vanish. 🏛️❤️
