We are extremely proud to announce that Norris City Fire Protection District is the recipient of the Small Equipment Grant through the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office. We have been awarded $19,200 to replace worn, outdated fire gear. This grant will allow us to purchase 6 new sets of pants, coats, nomex hoods and new personal flashlights. We truly appreciate the award and would like to thank Fire Marshal Pankow, Roger Branson with the State Fire Marshals Office Special Projects and the grant committee. We are constantly striving to find funds and resources to better serve the residents of our district.

Saturday I was able to attend a MABAS communication seminar at Benton along with William Delap of Enfield Fire Protection District. We learned what MABAS assets are available to our departments in case of large scale emergencies. This includes mobile communication centers, air refilling trucks, large, mobile, ventilation fans, portable, light towers, and many more. They also spent time on teaching the telecommunicators on the proper procedures for paging out MABAS calls over the radio. Thank you MABAS-Illinois for this seminar, the departments that houses these MABAS assets, Ryan Buckingham with Franklin County office of emergency management and benton fire chief Shane Cockrum and his firefighters for sharing their engine and ladder truck. It was a very informative day.

Accountability and Tracking of Companies training today with Illinois Fire Service Institute. Thank you to Taylor and Indian Creek Township for use of the building and Instructor, Chief Yenne.

The Accountability and Tracking Companies course provides a one-of-a-kind training opportunity. The course is broken down into two parts to provide instruction and training for accountability and the tracking of companies while on an emergency scene.

For accountability, instructors will provide how growth occurs by looking at your leadership, how influencing the climate creates a positive culture, and how your knowledge impacts firefighter safety.

Tracking companies on an emergency scene is vital, this can only occur by training and practicing. This course will provide tools to facilitate an understanding of why having a common language on an incident is vital. Incident Commanders must know where all companies are, provide ways to find individuals and or companies when the need arises, and have the ability to pass command when needed, which this class provides. Instructors challenge students by having them track companies with given scenarios and interactive discussions.

Along with using the new HIEBA site online, MABAS and the box cards takes all of the guess work out of requesting mutual aid and dramatically reduces radio traffic especially on our county frequencies. I really wish we would have started being active in MABAS a lot earlier.

I would like to announce the promotion of Captain Brad Hall to Assistant Fire Chief 1401 !!

Brad has been busy racking up state certifications left and right not only in Illinois but also in Indiana where he is a Captain on our fire brigade at Countrymark. He has owned the task of tracking our departments training with the Vector Solutions software making sure we stay compliant with Illinois Department of Labor and Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Office. Last year Brad, with help from our Captains Chris Garlick and Jarod McKenzie, started setting up multi-agency training sessions at the old voting house across from the legion to bring area departments together to get to know each other better and learn ever changing skills so we can work cohesively on mutual aid calls. He took on planning and scheduling Fire Safety Week at our schools teaching kids about what we do as firefighters and teaching home fire safety. Taking these roles has taken a burden off of me so I can focus more on strengthening our department, enhancing community protection, expanding our district and ways to help lower our insurance rates through ISO. Brad has been a huge part in what our department is today with his personality and values both professionally and personally. I truly appreciate all he has done for me and our department so far. I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Congratulations Brad for a very well deserved promotion.
