If you watched our recent YouTube video, you learned about the Atkinson family. The historical marker is at the end of the driveway of the Upper Dublin Friends Meetinghouse. Did you know that before the Upper Dublin Friends Meeting was established, Quakers in the area congregated at Horsham? The Upper Dublin Friends Meetinghouse was built in 1814 and the first meeting held in January 1815.

What is the difference between Declaration of Intention and Petition for Naturalization? From 1795 to 1952, the Declaration of Intention was the first step in the process of becoming a naturalized citizen. This allowed the individual to spend some time (2-5 years depending on when they filed) to learn about the country and the government. The Petition for Naturalization was the formal application to become a U.S. citizen. The examples shown here from our microfilm collection are for Joseph Klein, originally of Hungary and later of Pottstown.

It's like a story out of a cartoon or a slapstick comedy. On this day in history, August 20th, 1907, Henry Meerhoff went for a swim in the Schuylkill River. When he emerged after his swim he found his clothes missing! He waited until it was dark and snuck home inside of a flour barrel.

One of my favorite items here at HSMCPA is this map of Upper Dublin. I was born and raised there which is part of its appeal to me, but there is more. Someone took the time to place these two layers of tracing paper over the map showing what the area looked like over the years, including who originally purchased the land from William Penn.
