Drug overdoses happen every day. We’ve lost too many of our loved ones to it. Last month, Rep. Hanbidge and I celebrated the House passage of our bill that would make the animal sedative medetomidine a Schedule III drug – and hopefully, force its decline in the illegal drug market. Today in 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally murdered by two white men in Mississippi. His murderers were eventually acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury.

Emmett’s mother decided to hold an open-casket funeral for him, showing the nation the real-world impact of decades-old acceptance of violence against Black people in the South.

This tragedy was a key turning point in the start of the Civil Rights Movement. I ask you today to remember the loss of young Emmett’s life and the courage of his mother.

The 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote, was ratified today 106 years ago. Yet today in 2026, we’ve seen threats to the equal right to vote come from our federal leadership. That’s why I want the PA General Assembly to finally pass the K. Leroy Irvis Voter Rights Act, which would ensure every Pennsylvanian their right to vote now and far into the future.

I was saddened to learn the news of Mrs. Wright-Burruss's passing this weekend. She was a phenomenal teacher and an even better person. Our prayers are with her husband, her family including her extended Hancock family.
