We hope all are doing well at home as we begin our second week of practicing social distancing. We have some information provided by our friend James Holmes who is a retired school teacher with the North Adams Public Schools. We have attached some links to various educational websites where you and your children can go to learn about science, and gather some educational worksheets to help learn during this tough time. Thank you Mr. Holmes for these websites and helping our community.

After one day of having the mailbox out for the letters for seniors, we have received several dozen letters from our community. This is a fantastic show of community involvement and humanitarianism. The letters depicted beautiful art work, well-wishes, and stories of being alone in the hospital and sowing seeds with grandparents in gardens. Please keep the letters, drawings, and stories pouring in.

Here is a good idea to try with your kids. The North Adams Police Department is looking for people to write letters to the elderly currently quarantined at the North Adams Commons. These people are not able to see their loved ones and would love to read letters from people within the community. Tell a story, share a memory, or give a little autobiography about yourself. Whatever you prefer. These letters will brighten the day of all residing there and help them through this difficult time. All letters can be placed in the black mailbox at the front of the North Adams Police station marked “Senior Citizens”. All letters will be de-contaminated per the North Adams Commons policy, as well as CDC recommendations, before being brought to their facility. We appreciate the support and we hope you enjoy creative writing with your family.

Type: GENERAL INFORMATION

Date: March 19, 2020
Approved by: Chief Jason Wood

To properly practice social distancing during this pandemic, the North Adams Police Department is implementing some guidelines for the time being. The following information is in regards to the COVID-19 outbreak and the operations of the North Adams Police Department during this time period.
1. LTC/FID card applications / renewals are by appointment only. Please contact the North Adams Police station at (413-664-4944) and leave a message for Officer Erik Thomas to schedule any applications/renewals for LTC/FID cards.
2. All other fingerprint processing for employment purposes are suspended until further notice.
3. Medication collection in our lobby will be suspended until further notice.
4. No outside food donations will be accepted.
5. Officers will no longer assist with motor vehicle lockouts until further notice.
6. All summons or notices sent to the North Adams Police Department from Northern Berkshire District Court will be mailed to the address listed on the paperwork.
7. Massachusetts motor vehicle operator exchange paperwork for insurance purposes / operator crash reports following a motor vehicle crash will be mailed to the current RMV address listed for the vehicles involved. All inquiries of crash reports, or requests for paperwork regarding the crash are by appointment only, and people should contact the North Adams Police Department at 413-664-4944 and leave a message for Sergeant Zoito. We can also email you the information as well. Contact Sgt Zoito at the email account [email protected]. The Massachusetts motor vehicle operator crash reports should then be completed and mailed back to the station for the time being:

North Adams Police Department
Attn: Sgt. Al Zoito
11 Summer Street North Adams, MA 01247

8. All records requests or information processing should be limited to only time sensitive matters. If information or paperwork is required please contact Officer Kelly Wisniowski at 413-664-4944 for records requests.
9. Please contact the station via telephone for non-emergency issues and limit or refrain from entering the lobby of the station if possible. (413-664-4944)
10. Please call 911 for any emergency related events.

The North Adams Police Department is installing a locked door at the police station where dispatch can regulate who is coming and going from the lobby. If the public needs assistance they will be screened in via intercom before entering the building. Our goal is to limit our officer’s exposure to the virus so we can maintain a force that’s in position to protect the lives and property of the public as well as maintain public order during this difficult time. If the public establishes appointments then our officers will have the least amount of exposure to this virus. We thank you all for your patience during this time and we hope to keep providing you excellent service in the future.

One of our local residents suggested the idea of planting an indoor garden while we are all sitting at home with our children. Even though department and grocery store shelves are bare, there is still a large amount of indoor greenhouses available at Walmart. Here is picture of one of those greenhouses that our officers are using to grow vegetables, while teaching their children a valuable science lesson.

Many of you have recently inquired about whether North Adams Police Department was suspending processing of applications for LTCs or FIDs during the COVID-19 pandemic. I spoke with Chief Wood on this issue, and we agree that Chapter 140 does not allow for a delay past 40 days for anything including pandemics. We also agree that based upon the state of this pandemic, the greater risk to agencies at this point in time would be the potential liability for having entirely suspended such operations. We are going by the following guidelines in processing applications:

• Chapter 140 does allow for mail in applications (and giving receipts by mail). While few agencies do mail-in applications regularly, it is permitted by statute and is a temporary alternative.
• Applications are available on the FRB website. There is no need for applicants to go to the station to pick up an application - at least while we are trying to reduce public encounters in the station.
• Mail-in applications (pursuant to the statute) could be used as a temporary alternative just to get the licensing process started with in-person interviews if needed at a later time.
• The actual one-on-one processing time when used will be very brief, and we will be exercising common sense vigilance on hygiene issues.
• Consider using hand sanitizer in or around the licensing area and when completed.
• Applicants may bring a surgical mask to wear during this process.

In the event that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts ceases processing all other license applications (e.g. new driver’s licenses), then this guidance may change. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

With COVID-19 causing us all to be segregated with our families, we sometimes find ourselves to be encapsulated with negative media and stress. This impacts our family life and takes away from the importance of spending time with each other and making memories. We at the North Adams Police Department know all to well how hard it is to find things to do with children at home when the weather isn’t that great for going outside. Over the next few weeks we will attempt to post ideas of things to do at home with your families to keep them entertained, and away from the electronics. We hope that you all will participate in these activities and send pictures so we can post them on our page. If you have any ideas to share, or pictures you want posted, please send them in a private message on our page.

To start this off right we want to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. Some people have had the tradition in their family of making a leprechaun trap to try and catch a leprechaun on Saint Patrick’s Day. As the story goes, you leave the trap out at night on the night before Saint Patrick’s Day. On the morning of Saint Patrick’s Day, if you caught a leprechaun, you get to keep its pot of gold. If you don’t catch the leprechaun, then it will leave you some treats instead. We hope that other people out there celebrate the holiday by making these traps. If you haven’t started this tradition, then why not start this year. Send us some pictures of your traps and we will post them on our page. Good luck leprechaun hunting tonight. Here is a picture of a leprechaun trap made by one of our police officer’s family.

Shortly after 4:10pm Northern Berkshire EMS were called to a child over the embankment, between Brayton Hill and the Hoosac River with an injured ankle. North Adams Fire and Police also needed to respond to help with the extraction through the densely wooded area and steep embankment. Although the injuries were serious, they were not life threatening. The child was transported to BMC North for treatment. It was truly a well organized effort from all departments. As always NA Strong, Great Work !

‘Tis the season of holiday and joy so the North Adams Police Dept. would like to help spread some cheer to 1 family in need that lives in our wonderful city.
Retired teacher Jim Holmes of the North Adams Public Schools purchased a Christmas tree supporting our local Pop Cares Inc.
Mr. Holmes donated the tree to NAPD requesting us to pass on to a family in need in hopes to bring joy to their family for the holidays.
It is a beautiful 8’ tall tree but we will cut/trim to accommodate your home and we will deliver to you if needed.
All we ask is to comment and/or post a pic of you and/or your family with a little note saying what the holiday means to you.
The deadline to submit an entry is 12/19/19 at 8pm. and we will pick 1 family from those that have entered.
We will then reach out to you via instant messenger on Facebook to discuss trimming/delivery etc.
Happy Holidays from of all us 🎅🤶☃️❄️

Officers will begin issuing paper warnings to vehicles in violation on Nov 1st, for approximately a weeks time. During this time, I would encourage people explore their options in finding off street parking if required.

Also, be advised that vehicles parked on sidewalks will not be permitted at anytime.

Respectfully,
Jason R. Wood, Chief

Hey Everyone! We are asking for your help. There is a family near and dear to many hearts that needs your help right now. This amazing family has given themselves selflessly for many years and now we can come together and give a little back to them. Without going into detail out of respect for the family just know they are having a rough time and we can come together to ease the pain and burden they currently bare. Follow the link below to help and purchase your preferred apparel! Anything helps. Thank you all so much in advance, we couldn’t be more grateful for your support.
VERY impressed with the service & send off today for Officer John Morocco. We thank our service men & women for protecting our freedoms as Americans, as we should! :) BUT, this democracy would not exist if not for the men & women who put on Police, Firefighter, & EMT uniforms everyday. Military tours in most cases last 4 - 6 years. The careers these people choose last their entire working careers. They don't do it because they are ordered to as in the military, they do it because they CHOOSE to & that for me, says it all. THANK YOU ALL for everything you do everyday. :) STAY STRONG.
I'd like to know what I can legally do if someone tries to come to my home banging on my door screaming and yelling threatening me while trying to open my door and demanding her niece to let me in my home? I am glad y'all came as quickly as you did, however once I realized it weren't the police banging on my door before this person started speaking and my sons gf came out and told her aunt to leave and not start trouble. I wanted to kick her down my stairs however considering my past jail came across my mind while debating on whether to open my door kick her down the stairs or call the police. So I call the police and truly was just told if they come back call again. Id like to know to what extent I can go to legally without having charges pressed on me. I do know it has to be equal force or I'll be charged. But I'd like to know if I've got a legal right to protect myself and my home and to what extremes? I'm not sure if y'all realize the adrenalin one gets when rudely awakened like that too look out your window to realize it's not the police banging like that.
On Main Street -- in front of Moulton's and Bella Roma -- there's a large space that is clearly marked NO PARKING by both the white grid lines on the street and a sign that reads "No Parking Here To Corner." The very next space is a Handicapped Space. On more than one occassion I've seen people parked in the NO PARKING area even to the point where they're almost up against the Handicapped spot making it difficult for anyone with a Handicapped plate or placard to get in and out of the designated spot. If someone with a Handicapped Van wants to park there and put a ramp down for someone in a wheel chair it encumbers that space as well. Can that NO PARKING area be more closely monitored and tickets issued so people won't park there?
Dear NAPD, Although I live in Florida, I am still very much a part of North Adams. You are great servants of the community. The pictures I’ve been seeing of you playing with the city’s children, reaffirm this for me every time. Thank you! Keep up the good work!
Not sure who to contact but can we turn that crap music off at the baseball field?
