Date: Friday May 1, 2020
Authored by: Chief Jason R. Wood
Subject: Retirement of Dispatcher Maryann King

It took me some time to think about how I am supposed to choose the right words to give credit and recognition to someone who spent nearly half a century selflessly serving the City of North Adams. To that end, I came to this conclusion. It simply cannot be done.

Maryann King retired on April 29th, 2020 after spending 46 years serving the citizens of North Adams in various capacities. Thirty of those years in the Public Safety Division as Meter Maid, E911 Dispatcher and School Crossing Guard. Maryann also spent significant amounts of time on various committees for the City of North Adams. Listing Maryann’s job functions is the easy part.

Now onto the more difficult part of describing who Maryann is as a person. Maryann is the person who volunteered every time there was a retirement party to plan. Maryann is the person who sacrificed countless hours of her free time to maintain the uniforms of our police officers. Maryann is the person who was the first to step-up in helping plan functions such as National Night Out and the annual Downtown Celebration in regard to the Police Departments involvement. Maryann is the person almost all of us have talked to about our problems, whether they be professional of personal. Maryann provided a much-needed maternal touch in a predominately dominated male profession.

Speaking with Maryann recently about her retirement, I know she struggled with this decision on an emotional level. Maryann, I say this to you with sincere honor and respect. Please do not second guess your decision in retirement for a moment. Your family here at the North Adams Police Department will always be here for you. It is now time to enjoy more time with your husband. Visit your children and grandchildren more, which I know mean so much to you.

As I stated in the beginning, words cannot accurately describe what Maryann gave to the City of North Adams and the North Adams Police Department. However, I hope this attempt will at least give anyone who reads this the understanding of why I will always consider Maryann irreplaceable in many ways.

Enjoy your retirement Maryann!!

Sincerely,
Jason R. Wood, Chief of Police

Those of us on C-Shift would like to thank Whitman Cleaners for the donation of our dinner last night. And a special shout out to Pete Oleskiewicz @ Desperado’s for delivering it to us at almost one in the morning so we could get a hot meal! All three shifts got the same food but he went above and beyond to make sure ours was good and fresh! (And delicious too!)

How adorable?😍! This is a friends son that just turned 2! We all need a lil smile in our lives these days! 😀 I did get permission from mom to share! Thank you for all you do! 🚔
Loving all the books you guys are reading. My grandson loves it! Thanks!!
Where’s tonight’s book?
I just want to share a scam that came to me today. a friend's account got hacked yesterday. she started a new one and reported the hack but today I started getting messages from the hacked account. below is the conversation. please be careful. my daughter also got the same info from another person a while back that she nearly got stuck by because she didn't realize it wasn't the person right away... they are looking for your social security number, bank account, etc. and want you to send money to get the money. it's awful!
Thank you all for your service. I'm so glad that my grandchildren have some special role models to look up to.
