Northern Berkshire Community Coalition

Northern Berkshire Community Coalition The nbCC mission: Empowering the Northern Berkshire region to enhance the quality of life through our efforts at connecting, convening, and supporting all facets of the community.
Our Vision is to be the catalyst for a healthy, empowered, engaged community. Community Dialogue: We engage residents and stakeholders in community conversations to resolve local concerns from an asset based community perspective. Health and Wellness: We help our community make healthy eating and active living the easy choice, as well as create opportunities for access to health and wellness services. Leadership Training: We train adults and youth to be leaders within their community and build capacity to make positive change in our region. Substance Use Prevention: We develop strategies to delay youth alcohol/substance use and support community efforts for addiction recovery. Building Connections: We connect residents to local service agencies and provide opportunities for social engagement. Family Support: We provide families within our community the resources, activities, and group support needed to maintain a strong and resilient family. Parent Education: We provide workshops and classes for all parents to develop stronger skills to become the best parent they can be for their children. Youth Development: We actively build a positive youth development culture by encouraging youth to grow and realize their full potential. We also support those who work with youth through networking and training efforts.

Beacon Recovery Community Center is extending a warm and welcoming invitation to YOU. Please join us this week for Open Hours at 85 Main Street, North Adams (in The Green). We hold open hours on Tuesday evenings and during the day on Wednesday. (schedule below)

Whether you thinking about recovery, just starting your path to recovery, want support to sustain your recovery, or have a friend or loved one struggling with addiction, we invite you to stop in and join us for a visit. The opposite of addiction is connection, and the connections made within BRCC are amazing. Our All Recovery meeting is a place where individuals using any pathway can connect and support each other. Those who attend 12-Step meetings will find this is a wonderful supplement to those meetings. And if by chance, 12-Step meetings have not been a good fit, many find All Recovery meetings helpful.

Our agenda for tomorrow's open hours is:

10:00 - 11:00 Meet & Mingle with Coffee
11:00 - 12:00 All Recovery Meeting
12:00 - 12:30 Refreshments
12:30 - 1:30 Community Meeting
~ Announcements
~ Discussion:
* How we orient new members to BRCC
* Use of social media in recovery (pros and cons)
* Spring outings
1:30 - 2:00 Wind down, social time, and clean up

Please join us and bring friends and family!

You don’t need to spend too much time on the streets of North Adams before you will inevitably see Patrick Hernandez. Patrick, or Pat to his friends (which is just about everyone, it seems), is well known for always having a minute to stop and chat with anyone he runs into. His is one of the most familiar faces at the Berkshire Food Project, where he volunteers hours upon hours of his time to help feed hundreds of people from Monday to Friday. In fact, Pat is recognized as the volunteer with the most hours donated in 2019, coming in at a whopping 784 hours for the entire year. Keep up the great work, Pat!

01/21/2020

Pete Oleskiewicz is well known in North County. Many recognize him as the owner of Desperado's on Eagle Street in North Adams, recent City Council candidate, and an active member of this community. In the Northern Berkshire Bocce League, Pete was known for never showing up empty handed to the tournaments; the cases of water and the watermelons he brought were very welcome in the summer sun. But in November, Pete's generosity went above and beyond when he prepared a Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings, including dessert, for the residents of the Louison House. The holidays can be challenging for many people in North County, and indeed this is the case throughout the entire country. Pete's contribution hopefully made the holidays brighter for a few families. For that reason, we're recognizing him with our Neighborly Spotlight for the month of January.

Do you know someone in the Northern Berkshires that's gone the extra mile? Recognize their efforts with a Neighborly Award. It's up to you to shine a light on the good deeds of your family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. Be neighborly; give a Neighborly! The Neighborly Award Ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18th from 5-7pm, and submissions to recognize someone are due by November 2nd. Visit here to recognize someone today in one of the following categories; Neighborly Acts, Youth Taking the Lead, Business & Groups Pulling Together, Community Health & Wellness, and Family Support.

MLK Jr. Day of Service Reminders and Updates: There are a few sites that are outdoors so please dress accordingly. One of the on-site projects will be making no sew bags out of t-shirts. We are encouraging folks to bring a T-shirt to donate.

In lieu of this year's theme "We all came in on different ships, but we're all in the same boat now" Mass MoCA is offering free tour of the exhibition ERRE: Them and Us/Ellos y Nosotros on Sunday 1/19/20. Participants should meet in the museum lobby at 11am to walk together to Building 6 (note: backpacks and food/drinks are not permitted in the galleries). The program will last about an hour. Attendees can then take part in an open-ended conversation on Monday, at the Day of Service, on how the exhibition can be used to build awareness of how borders can be a metaphor for how we treat people as “other," examine the borders or divisions in their own personal lives, and consider the ways that art can be a form of activism.

As part of MLK Day, we will be doing a collection of donations at Stop n' Shop during the weekend (Sat 10-2pm, Sun 10-12:30pm) leading up to the day on Monday (10-12pm) as one of the service sites to benefit local shelters.
Please park in the visitor lot off Church Street. Handicap parking available on Montana Street.

Follow the directional signs throughout the campus leading to the Venable Gym.
