The ruby on his throat isn't red. It's physics. 🤯💚

There's no red pigment in a ruby-throated hummingbird's gorget. What you're seeing is light being broken apart and reflected back by microscopic platelet structures inside the feather — the same basic principle as a soap bubble or an oil slick.

That's why his throat looks fire-red in direct sun and nearly black when he turns away from you.

You're not just watching a bird. You're watching a living prism. 🌈✨

Defending the Dark is an indie film presented in a film series on Maine Public. Defending the Dark looks at northern Maine's Unique Dark Sky, and stresses the importance of preserving dark sky, for the health of animals, and humans. On April 6, the Artemis II crew looked out their window aboard Orion… and captured this.

The right side? That's the Moon we've always known. Those dark patches are ancient lava flows from billions of years ago. 🌋

But that giant crater in the middle… that's Orientale basin. Nearly 600 miles wide. 🤯

From Earth, we only ever see HALF of it.

The Artemis II crew just showed us the rest. 🚀

For the first time in 50 years… humans are this close to the Moon. And they're bringing us along for the ride. 🌑
