๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿš“National Night Out Registration

On Tuesday, August 4, neighborhoods throughout North Aurora will join communities across the nation for National Night Out (NNO): a crime and drug prevention event.

The focus of NNO is bringing neighborhoods together, having fun, and being united against crime and disorder. From 5:00 pmโ€”9:00 pm residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.

Registration for National Night Out is free and gives public safety officials the opportunity to attend your event as time and call volume allow. Please register by July 24 by contacting Officer Dave Parr at (630) 897-8705, ext. 714 or [email protected].

๐Ÿšจ Scam of the Week: Genuine Alert, Fake Emergency

In this week's scam, cybercriminals are using fake purchase alerts to target Apple users. You receive what appears to be a genuine Apple email that says, "Your Apple Account information has been updated." It states that someone used your account to purchase an iPhone and includes a phone number to call to cancel the order. Since you didn't authorize this purchase, you may be tempted to call the number immediately.

If you call the number in the email, you'll be connected to a "support person" who will tell you that your account has been compromised. But this email is a phishing scam, and the โ€œsupport personโ€ is actually a cybercriminal! They'll ask you to provide your financial information so that they can fix the problem, or they may ask you to install software that will allow them to access your device. They can then use that information or software to steal your money or personal data!

Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to this phishing scam:

โ€ข If you receive an unexpected email claiming that someone used your Apple account to make a purchase, do not call any phone number listed in the email. Instead, go directly to Apple's official website or open the Settings app on your device to check your account activity.

โ€ข Read emails carefully, even if they seem to come from a legitimate source. Unusual formatting or grammatical errors can be warning signs of a phishing email.

โ€ข Always stop and think before you act! Cybercriminals often create a sense of urgency to try and pressure you into making fast decisions.

If youโ€™ve gone outside the last couple days, you know itโ€™s been pretty hot! ๐Ÿฅต And as we get into summer, those temperatures are only going to go up! We would like to take this opportunity to show you what the heat alarm sensors in our K9 vehicles - that Pawfficers Zelda and Atlas ride in โ€” look and sound like. If these go off and you donโ€™t see an officer in the immediate area, please give us a call! We want to make sure our canine companions stay safe!

This is also a reminder that while our vehicles are equipped with these life-saving features, the standard vehicle is not. Please do not leave your pets inside vehicles during warmer temperatures. In as little as 10 minutes on a 75ยฐ day the inside of the vehicle can feel like 100ยฐ! Safety first for all of our community members whether they have two legs or four!
