International Wrongful Conviction Day is a day to raise awareness of the causes and remedies of wrongful conviction and to recognize the tremendous personal, social, and emotional costs of wrongful conviction for innocent people and their families. Wrongful Conviction Day began as an effort of the Innocence Network, an affiliation of organizations dedicated to providing pro-bono legal and investigative services to individuals seeking to prove innocence of crimes for which they have been convicted, working to redress the causes of wrongful convictions, and supporting the exonerated after they are freed. There are more than 110 million criminal history records in state and federal criminal history archives. These millions of Americans face significant barriers to success when trying to rejoin their community and are frequently left without the opportunity to escape the shadow of their criminal records. They not only face social stigma from old friends and neighbors, but also face over 44,000 legal barriers that impact their ability to start a business, secure employment, find a suitable place to live, and conduct themselves as contributing members of their local communities. In a thoughtfully written commentary, Mitch Albom shares lessons we can learn from Justice Ginsburg's life's work, especially how to disagree without being disagreeable.

I am not a woman. That’s obvious. But it didn’t keep me from admiring Ruth Bader Ginsburg for years, her courage, her tenacity, her firm belief in being a fair jurist and standing up for issues she believed in. I am not a lawyer. And I did not agree with all of Ginsburg’s yes votes or […]

🟥 THE OOBN STORY 🟥 Every story has a beginning and ours begins in 2009 on the Texas-New Mexico border adjacent to Mexico, just 15 miles north of El Paso. A town called Anthony, Texas is home to a Federal Correctional Institution - or "FCI," - called La Tuna. It was here at La Tuna, FCI, that federal inmates came up with several intriguing and positive ideas. One of those ideas has already turned into reality, a book entitled "False Confessions."

While at La Tuna, FCI, several inmates began discussing their experiences, both prior to and during their time in prison. One of inmates in the group began to focus upon one particular theme and expounded on it. His name was Jack. Some have called him "The Wizard," and like the Wizard who pulled levers from behind a curtain to create positive things in the movie, "The Wizard of Oz," so, too, did Jack though, Jack will be the first to tell you that he didn't do it alone. And, he didn't pull any lever nor have a curtain. Jack actually created his magic from behind a large concrete wall with gun towers.

It didn't take long for Jack to become the official "Mayor" of the compound, which means he was the person who dealt with the shot callers ("Shot- Callers" are specific individuals elected to speak for their respective group / gang). The "Mayor" behind the fence is a real title. The truth is, shot-callers came to Jack. He was considered to be intelligent and fair.

During the day, Jack and the rest of the group would discuss their individual business ideas during strategy meetings held in the yard. At night, their meetings would take place within their living quarters. Some of these meetings would go late into the evening. The unit that Jack and some of the other inmates lived in was Unit 2, which is a specific housing complex for La Tuna, FCI.

Jack has since moved on to other federal institutions, such as ADX in Colorado and Big Sandy in Kentucky. There, he has met other like-minded inmates who have shared their ideas and connected with Jack's overall theme. That great theme is to: "Help others achieve success!"

Together, they all collaborated to create several prison-themed companies. Each person brings their own unique experiences and knowledge to such projects such as books, TV and motion picture production ideas, craft-beer line, a themed restaurant & cocktail bar, music production - creating the possibility of a streaming platform of opportunities, all run by others who have been affected by the criminal justice system.

The arrest of a parent can be traumatic for many children. As noted in a comprehensive review of research on children with incarcerated parents, “The arrest and removal of a mother or father from a child’s life forces that child to confront emotional, social and economic consequences that may trigger behavior problems, poor outcomes in school and a disruption or severance of the relationship with the incarcerated parent that may persist even after the parent is released from prison.” It is so important to remember those that are left behind and ensure broken families can be mended.
