๐ŸŽฌ Rescue North Beach โ€“ Horseshoe Crab Edition (2026)

๐Ÿฆ€ Each spring and early summer, warming waters and lunar cycles bring one of nature's oldest creatures to our shores. Horseshoe crabs make their annual journey to the shallow sandy beaches and estuaries of the Chesapeake Bay to spawn, continuing a life cycle that has existed for more than 400 million years.

As coastal development, shoreline hardening, and erosion create new challenges for both people and wildlife, local volunteers have stepped up to help. Working through the North Beach Horseshoe Crab Information Page, dedicated community members patrol the shoreline, rescuing horseshoe crabs that become trapped among rocks or stranded upside down by the tides - giving them a second, third, fourth, or even fifth chance at survival.

๐Ÿ’™ Every rescued crab helps support the health of our local ecosystem and preserves a remarkable species for future generations.

โš ๏ธ Interested in joining a rescue effort? Participation requires a signed waiver. Waivers are available online or in person at North Beach Town Hall. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

๐Ÿฆ€ Exciting Research is Happening in North Beach - and We Need Your Help! ๐Ÿฆ€

The Town of North Beach, in partnership with the College of Southern Maryland and our local North Beach Horseshoe Crab Rescue Group, is participating in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Serviceโ€™s Horseshoe Crab Cooperative Tagging Program. This is the first project in North Beach, and one of the first large scale projects in the state.

This important project helps scientists collect data on horseshoe crab movement, distribution, lifespan, and survival - information that is currently limited in Calvert County and along Marylandโ€™s western Chesapeake Bay shoreline. The data helps guide conservation and management decisions that support healthy horseshoe crab populations, benefiting shorebirds, commercial fisheries, and the biomedical industry.

๐Ÿ” How You Can Help

If you spot a horseshoe crab with a white circular tag on the beach:

โœ… Report the tag number and location at www.fws.gov/crabtag
๐Ÿ“ž Or call 1-800-448-8322

After reporting, please let us know so we can track crabs tagged specifically at North Beach:

๐Ÿ“ง Naturalist Paige Stevens: [email protected]
๐Ÿ“ฑ Call or text: 443-771-5986
