A Message from the CoosDems on the recent Supreme Court Decision:

Yesterday brought another gut punch to our Constitution, our democracy, and vote-by-mail with the Supreme Court’s latest decision.

Shock, anger, and despair are understandable. We were rattled too. But that feeling has been replaced by patience, perspective, and resolve.

This is a setback—not the end of the fight.

Importantly, the Court did **not** rule on the legality of the executive order itself. The majority concluded that because the Postal Service rule had not yet taken effect and no harm had yet occurred, the challenge was premature. The Court even acknowledged that future actions implementing the order may still be unlawful.

There is good reason, then, to believe this fight will return to the courts once the rule takes effect.

And here in Oregon, our elected leaders have made clear they intend to keep fighting.

Attorney General Dan Rayfield: "We’re not going to let Donald Trump interfere in our elections—and we’re certainly not going to let him decide who gets a ballot and who doesn’t. Today’s court decision is a temporary setback, nothing more. This fight is far from over.”

Secretary of State Tobias Read: “We will continue to challenge this over-reaching executive order in court with the Attorney General when the time is right.”

Governor Tina Kotek: “My message to the President is clear: keep your hands off our elections.”

Over the past decade, we have faced plenty of moments that tested our resolve. As Tobias Read has said, “We can’t let the cynics win.”

The cynics win when shock becomes paralysis and anger becomes despair. We cannot let that happen.

Instead, let’s turn the emotions of yesterday into the actions of tomorrow.

One of the most immediate things we can do is support Tina Kotek. The next two years will require a governor willing to stand up to Trump, defend Oregon’s elections, and challenge federal actions that threaten our rights and our democracy.

Having one that will give in would be disastrous.

Whether through digital advocacy, door-knocking, phone calls, postcards, or conversations with friends and neighbors, we must all help re-elect Tina Kotek.

Please reach out to [email protected] to get involved today!

The fight is not over!

Sal Carothers is out of line.

We understand wanting to push back on Republicans, but polarization is the true enemy. MAGA has deteriorated the character of the Republican Party, but we will not allow the character of the Coos County Democrats to follow suit. We will never stop fighting against bigotry, lying, or the unprecedented assaults on our Constitution, but we’ll do it with civility.

There is a reason why the Sticker Vandal agreed to be a part of the apology— being a part of a community means making concessions and treating people kindly when you’d rather argue.

Everyone’s first impulse is anger— that’s normal. But standing up for our values doesn’t mean being petty or immature. It means fighting with truth, strength, and decency.

p.s. Sal, why’d you block us? Weird behavior.

How many folks here in Coos County are at risk of hunger now that SNAP has been slashed? SNAP has always been an extremely affordable direct form of economic relief for our poorest, and it even boosts local GDP! How are the local food banks faring?

Oregon families are struggling to afford groceries. Thousands are losing SNAP benefits. Record numbers of people are visiting food banks, but some say they're running low on food.
