Twenty years of service is more than a milestone. It is a legacy of commitment, courage, and care for the North Bend community.

On Tuesday, the North Bend City Council recognized Lieutenant Luke Rector for 20 years of service with North Bend Fire & Rescue. Before joining the department as an employee, Luke also served as a volunteer, reflecting a longstanding dedication to helping others.

Over the past two decades, Lieutenant Rector has built a career marked by hard work, steady leadership, and a true passion for the fire service. From his early days studying fire science at Southwestern Oregon Community College to his recent promotion to Lieutenant and graduation from the National Fire Academy, Luke has continued to grow, lead, and serve with excellence.

During the recognition, Fire Chief Jim Brown spoke about Luke’s strong work ethic, his commitment to the profession, and the bright future ahead of him. Lieutenant Rector also shared his appreciation for the department, his coworkers, and the opportunity to do the work he loves every day.

The City of North Bend is grateful for Lieutenant Rector’s service to our residents, businesses, and visitors. Please join us in congratulating him on this remarkable accomplishment and thanking him for 20 years of dedication to our community.

🚁 Drone Training – Interagency Collaboration in Action 🚁

Today, members from the North Bend Fire Department, North Bend Police Department, Coos Bay Fire Department, and Coos Bay Police Department came together for a joint drone training focused on real-world scenarios.

Crews trained on locating and tracking individuals who may be lost or actively fleeing, using advanced UAS capabilities to improve response effectiveness and safety. During the exercise, two drones were deployed simultaneously—one dedicated to reconnaissance and scene awareness, and the other focused on tracking and locating the subject.

This type of training highlights the importance of strong partnerships between agencies. By working together, we enhance our ability to quickly and efficiently serve our communities, share resources, and operate as a unified team when it matters most.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and continues to invest in training that strengthens regional response capabilities.

New Tsunami Alert Message on Cell Phones: What You Need to Know

Starting now, the National Weather Service has updated the tsunami warning messages sent to cell phones through Wireless Emergency Alerts. The goal is simple: clearer information when every second counts.

If a tsunami warning is issued, the alert message will now use more direct language, including: 🌊 “MOVE TO HIGH GROUND OR INLAND NOW”

🌊 A stronger warning about life-threatening waves and currents

🌊 A reminder to stay away until officials announce the all clear

One important change is that the message no longer says “You are in danger.” That wording caused confusion because tsunami alerts often reach people outside the hazard zone. In other words, some people may receive the alert even if they are already on safe, dry ground.

That is why it is so important to know whether you are in a tsunami hazard zone.

Here’s the key takeaway:

✅ If you are in the tsunami hazard zone, move immediately to high ground or inland

✅ If you are not in the hazard zone, you do not need to relocate

✅ Even if an alert reaches you, always use your location and local emergency guidance to decide what action to take

You may also receive additional local emergency alerts from local authorities with more specific instructions during a tsunami event. The tsunami warning message described here is the message sent by the National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning Center.

Preparedness starts before an alert ever goes off. Take time now to learn your zone, know your evacuation route, and talk with your family about what to do.

🎄 Making Christmas Happen for Local Kids 🎁

The North Bend Fire Department is proud to recognize two incredible community partners — ILWU Local 12 and McKay’s Market — whose generosity continues to make our Kids for Christmas program possible year after year.

For over a decade, ILWU Local 12 has donated thousands of toys each year, helping ensure that every child we serve wakes up on Christmas morning with something to open. Their commitment brings joy, excitement, and unforgettable moments to so many kids in our community.

For more than 20 years, McKay’s Market has played a vital role by organizing and providing food baskets for our Kids for Christmas families, helping ensure that the holidays are not only joyful, but also warm and nourishing. Because of their efforts, families can gather, share meals, and focus on what matters most — being together during the holiday season.

Recently, Volunteer Firefighters Association President Mike Runn and Fire Chief Jim Brown, along with members of the department, had the honor of presenting plaques to both organizations as a small token of our appreciation.

The success of Kids for Christmas is built on partnerships like these. Together, we bring hope, joy, and support to families right here in our community.

❤️ Thank you, ILWU Local 12 and McKay’s Market, for helping us take care of our kids and families — not just at Christmas, but year after year.

Congratulations to the Vale Vikings girls basketball team on an exciting semifinal win over the Creswell Bulldogs and a hard-earned trip to the championship game tomorrow.

We are proud to help host this year’s tournament and to welcome these outstanding student-athletes, coaches, families, and fans to our community. What these teams are doing is not easy. These young women are leaving it all on the court, playing with heart, determination, and grit every single game.

A special shoutout to the Vikings on an incredible season. As champions of the 3A Eastern Oregon League, Vale has shown exactly what it means to compete at a high level, and their run to the finals is well deserved.

To every team competing this weekend: congratulations. Everybody who reaches this stage is a winner. Not everyone will take home the championship trophy, but every team here has earned respect through hard work, sacrifice, and heart.

Best of luck to the Vikings in the finals tomorrow, and thank you to all the teams for putting on a great tournament.
