Wastewater Treatment Plant staff recently identified instances of suspected illegal dumping of septic or portable-toilet (sani-can) waste directly into city manholes.

Staff and the North Bend Police Department are actively monitoring our system and following a few leads. A collections system inspection is beginning this month as well.

Septic and portable-toilet waste can overwhelm or kill the biological organisms that clean wastewater inside the treatment plant. When these systems fail, it can lead to permit violations and environmental impacts to local waterways. Additionally, as the waste has not been screened or inspected for contaminants, this can cause severe damage to pumping equipment throughout the collection system and the wastewater treatment plant. Repairing this damage can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ฉ

โœ… Report suspicious activity immediately. If you see a septic truck, portable-toilet service vehicle, or any other hauler dumping into an open manhole or storm drain, call the Wastewater Treatment Plant emergency line right away, at (425) 765-0531.
โœ… Note details if it is safe to do so: Company name on the truck, license plate, time, and location can assist with enforcementโ€”but never approach or confront a driver.

๐๐ž๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ

โ€ผ Civil and Administrative Fines: Department of Ecology can levy fines ranging from a few thousand dollars to over $100,000, depending on the severity.
โ€ผ Criminal Charges: illegally dumping raw waste can lead to misdemeanor or felony charges, potentially resulting in jail time.
โ€ผ Restitution: beyond fines, the full cost of environmental cleanup, system repairs, and remediation of any damages would also be charged.

Your vigilance helps protect our waterways, our infrastructure, and our public health.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe.

The Meadowbrook Sewer Utility Local Improvement District (ULID) project continues this summer, on schedule, with road rehabilitation that began today, on June 22.

On Monday, crews from Northwest Construction are constructing a permanent trench patch along NW 14th St, from SR 202/Bendigo Boulevard to Boalch Ave NW, smoothing and rehabilitating roadway following sewer line construction in this area.

Drivers are experiencing traffic delays, with one-way alternating traffic and single lane closures.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, crews will construct a permanent trench patch along Boalch Ave NW, from Gardiner Creek Bridge near Sirius Sports Fields, to SR 202/Bendigo Blvd. Similarly, this road rehabilitation work will create traffic delays, with one-way alternating traffic and single lane closures.

Thank you for your patience as crews work to complete this important infrastructure improvement project.

Residents have reported increases in mail theft this year. While the U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigates mail theft and mail fraud, there are steps we can take as a community to help safeguard our mail:

โœ… Promptly pickup mail. Try not to leave letters and packages in your mailbox or at your door for any length of time.
โœ… Inquire about overdue mail. If you do not receive a check, credit card, or other valuable mail you are expecting, contact the sender as soon as possible and ask.
โœ… Do not send cash. Be careful about what you send through the mail. Do not risk sending cash through the postal service.
โœ… Arrange for prompt pickup. If you cannot be home to receive a package, make another arrangement or use the United States Postal Service (USPS) Hold Mail Service.
โœ… Require a signature of receipt for deliveries. When mailing something important, consider requesting Signature Confirmation for the intended recipient.
โœ… If you have moved recently, file a change of address. File a change of address with the Postal Service and let your financial institutions know as well.

โ€ผ๏ธ If you see any suspicious behavior or have concerns, report it to the North Bend Police Department by dialing 9-1-1, or call the King County Sheriff's Office Communications Center, at (206) 296-3311.
