📚Today's schools require learning spaces that support collaboration, technology, and a variety of instructional programs. The reputation of our high-achieving district speaks for itself; we are consistently ranked among the top places to learn and work in New Jersey. Our students are successful, and to prepare them for our next steps, our programs are constantly evolving.

✏️The referendum includes a two-story classroom addition, a renovated media center, and a modern journalism lab designed to support today's students while providing flexibility for the future. See what these updates could look like at www.westex.org/referendum.

If voters approve both referendum questions, the state provides $9.3 million toward the projects to offset the local tax impact. Voters will have a choice in their level of investment, and Question 2 can only pass if voters approve Question 1. Read all the details at www.westex.org/referendum

📱 NJ state law now requires “bell-to-bell” restrictions on student personal electronic devices in all public schools. As a result, West Essex has updated its procedures for the 2026–2027 school year to comply with the new state requirements.

Families are encouraged to review the updated expectations, accommodations, and enforcement procedures before the start of school.

WE are proud of our record of fiscal responsibility. Careful planning and good stewardship are the keys to our approach, but it has taken 12 years to carve out more than $12 million on improvements within our annual budgets and capital reserve. An approved referendum will give us an opportunity to complete $49.5 million in improvements with upfront funding over a few years, and with the benefit of state aid. 🎉 Congratulations, Ms. Sommer! 🎉 We are pleased to share that at the July 15th Board of Education meeting, Ms. Lauren Sommer was officially approved as the Middle School Assistant Principal, effective July 16th, 2026.

This appointment follows the transition of Mr. Jeffrey Martin, who will be returning to the classroom as a Mathematics teacher at the High School beginning with the 2026–2027 school year. We thank him for his dedicated service as Middle School Assistant Principal and look forward to his continued contributions to our district in this new role.

Ms. Sommer has been a dedicated member of our district since 2003 and is also a proud graduate of our schools. Throughout her career, she has served as Science Department Lead Teacher, been recognized as the Governor’s Educator of the Year, led a variety of student and staff initiatives, and fostered strong partnerships with our sending districts.

Please join us in congratulating Ms. Sommer as she begins her new role as Middle School Assistant Principal. We look forward to the passion and enthusiasm she will bring to this position and wish her continued success. 👏 ❤️
