Your North Caldwell Fire Department has been active with calls yesterday and today.

Last night Engine 6 and crew responded on mutual aid into Cedar Grove. North Caldwell, along with West Caldwell and Fairfield assisted Cedar Grove by providing coverage for any potential calls in town while they were operating at a structure fire. Engine 6 was standing by in Cedar Grove for close to 2 hours before being released.

Today North Caldwell Fire Department was dispatched to a reported garbage truck fire in a parking lot off of Mountain Ave. Upon arrival of the fire department, the garbage truck had dumped their load of garbage that was still smoldering at the time. Fire department units operated by pulling apart the area that was smoldering and wetting down that portion of the load and the area around it.

While pulling apart the smoldering portion of the load, a lithium ion battery was discovered and determined to potentially be associated with the cause of the fire. This leaves a good opportunity to remind everyone to be mindful when disposing of lithium ion batteries. Batteries that end up in a garbage truck can potentially fail when the garbage truck compacts the load.

Approximately 4pm Sunday May 3rd, the North Caldwell Fire Department was requested to respond mutual aid to the scene in Belleville. Engine 5 responded to what would eventually become a 12+ alarm fire.

Engine 5's crew assisted with getting supply lines in place. Once water supplies were established, Engine 5 assisted with extinguishing fire utilizing the deck gun. Engine 5 also was utilized to pump water to a Jersey City ladder truck and a ground monitor. The crew operated for about 11 hours, throughout the night and into the early morning hours before clearing from the scene around 3:30 Monday morning.

Early Tuesday morning Engine 5, along with multiple other towns returned to Belleville to assist with a relay pumping operation to supply water from blocks away to multiple ladder trucks operating at the scene. Engine 5 assisted with the relay pumping operations for approximately 6 hours before being relieved.

Have you ever noticed at odds times of the day or night a pair of blue lights flashing in your rear view mirror? Did you wonder what those lights meant?

As your North Caldwell Department Fire is proudly staffed by volunteers for nearly 104 years, we often need to respond from our homes, businesses, or the grocery store to the firehouse in the event of an emergency.

In order to be able to get the fire engines on the road in a timely manner to respond to an emergency, firefighters are able to obtain a permit to utilize a blue light to let other motorists know that they are responding to an emergency. These lights warrant firefighters to pass other vehicles, when it is safe to do so.

Under New Jersey law, these lights have the same requirements to yield the right of way as a responding police car or fire truck. When it is safe to do so, a motorist should yield the right of way to a vehicle responding with these lights.

Whether it is on Mountain Avenue, Central Avenue, or Knollwood Drive, when you see blue lights in your rear view mirror, you should yield the right of way, when it is safe to do so, to the firefighter responding to an emergency.

Flashing blue lights on non-police vehicles in New Jersey aren't just flashy, they indicate something just as important as if it was a police car.
