It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Retired Lieutenant Stanley “Stan” Strausser, who died Saturday morning in Florida at the age of 70 following a short battle with pancreatic cancer. While some may not have known him personally, his long service and commitment to this department left a lasting and meaningful mark.
Lt. Strausser dedicated the majority of his life to serving the City of North Canton and its Police Department. He began his career in public safety in 1972 as a full-time dispatcher with the North Canton Police Department while still a senior at Hoover High School. After spending time with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office and working in private security with the Ford Motor Company, he returned home to North Canton and was sworn in as a patrolman on May 26, 1987.
The son of longtime Mayor Charles B. Strausser, Stan proudly carried on his family’s legacy of service to the community, a tradition that continues today through members of his family, including his nephew, Sgt. Ron Mizner.
Through dedication, professionalism, and steady leadership, Stan rose through the ranks and, in 1999, was promoted to Lieutenant, where he served as the commander of the Detective Bureau following the retirement of Lt. Denny Myers. He remained in that role until his retirement on January 20, 2015.
Stan was deeply committed to his professional growth and the advancement of the law enforcement profession. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement Administration, a Master’s degree in Public Administration, and completed both the School of Police Staff and Command and the Police Executive Leadership College. Among his many accomplishments, he was recognized as the Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer in 1995 and served as President of the Police Department Benevolent Association for 18 years.
We extend our deepest condolences to Stan’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. His legacy of service, leadership, and dedication will not be forgotten.
