Why Babies Still Die in Their Sleep: Unsafe Infant Sleep

Safe Sleep Saves Lives
Every baby deserves a safe place to sleep. Always place your baby on their back for every sleep—naps and nighttime.
Place your baby alone, on their back, in a crib, bassinet, or other safety-approved sleep space with a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheet. Keep pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, crib bumpers, and other soft or loose items out of the sleep area.
Safe sleep practices can help reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and other sleep-related infant deaths.

Back to sleep. Alone. On a firm, flat surface. Every sleep. Every time.

Why Babies Still Die in Their Sleep: Unsafe Infant Sleep Let’s do an experiment: while sitting up in a chair, take in as deep of a breath as you can and let it out. Now, tuck your chin into your chest and try to take another deep breath. It should feel restrictive and uncomfortable, like you can.....

This coming Thursday is the 8th Annual Light the Way for Hope event.

This evening of remembrance and hope honors the lives we have lost to overdose, supports those whose lives have been impacted by substance use, and reminds us that every life matters and every person deserves hope.

Join us as we light the way in memory of those we have lost, in support of those who are struggling, and with hope for a future where fewer families experience the devastating impact of overdose.

đź’§ HYDRATION FOR HOPE đź’ś
August 27 | Overdose Awareness Month

Sometimes, making a difference starts with something as simple as offering a cold bottle of water, a snack, a resource—or simply taking a moment to connect with someone.

In one week, on August 27, community partners will come together for Hydration for Hope, bringing outreach directly into communities throughout Charleston County.

Teams will be out connecting with individuals, offering cold water, snacks, helpful resources, and support as we recognize Overdose Awareness Month and work together to prevent overdose deaths.

This day is about more than handing out supplies. It is about meeting people where they are, building connections, offering hope, and reminding our community that help is available.

Throughout the month of August, the Charleston County Coroner’s Office is proud to support an important community effort to help prevent overdose deaths.

We are encouraging members of our community to come to the Al Cannon Detention Center at the dates posted above to volunteer with the packaging and distribution of Narcan kits.

Narcan can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose and give someone a second chance at life. By helping package and distribute these kits, you can play a direct role in putting a lifesaving resource into the hands of someone who may need it.

Every kit we put together is an opportunity to save a life. Every person who volunteers helps strengthen our community’s response to the overdose crisis.

Remember. Honor. Step Forward.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office is honored to stand alongside the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office for Step Forward, a memorial effort dedicated to remembering the lives lost to overdose over the past year.

Each pair of shoes on display represents a life—a person who was loved, who mattered, and whose absence is deeply felt by family, friends, and our community.

These shoes are more than a memorial. They are a reminder of the devastating impact of overdose and of the importance of compassion, prevention, education, and support for those struggling with substance use.

Take the time to pause and remember those we have lost, honor the people who continue to grieve, and stand together as a community committed to stepping forward.

We remember their lives.
We honor their stories.
We step forward together.
