BLUE GROSBEAK
This stocky songbird has an enormous triangular bill. The breeding male is a vibrant blue with chestnut wingbars, the female is a light brown with brown wingbars. Blue grosbeaks inhabit old fields that are growing back to woodland. Their breeding habitat is areas of mixed grass and shrubs, with a few taller trees. Despite their bright colors, they blend in well with their surroundings, often singing perched atop shrubs and small trees. This species has the odd habit of twitching its tail sideways.

AMERICAN GOLDFINCH
The American goldfinch is frequently found in fields, orchards, and gardens, and can be easily seen visiting bird feeders. Since this finch's main food is seeds, nesting does not begin until mid to late summer when wildflower seeds are available. The finches are one of the latest nesting birds, remaining in flocks until well after other species have formed pairs and nested. In winter migration, they are sometimes hesitant to fly across water, many times stopping by the waterside before continuing south.
