The Texas Department of Transportation maintains 38,000 miles of roads in the Austin area, some of which deal with major flooding issues.

To be proactive with flood response, managers need accurate road elevation maps. They used a combination of lidar and NOAA’s land cover data to analyze a variety of flood scenarios, revealing bridges at risk from flooding.

Now, the department can use this information to plan ahead for potential structural failures, impacts to evacuation routes, and impacts to emergency responder routes during storms.

High tide flooding is likely for several regions of the U.S. in June.

🌑 Higher than normal tides will occur on and around the new moon on the 14th, which could lead to at least minor coastal flooding in low-lying areas.

🌑 Be on the lookout for high tide flooding in the Pacific Islands, California coast, and the Northeast coast.
