Today, we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. A time to remember the lives lost, to honor their family and friends and to be proactive in saving lives.

For 25 years, IOAD has brought communities together because overdose affects every community, yet it can be prevented.

Charleston County remains committed to real-time overdose response, community-based recovery efforts, and innovative programs that support long-term solutions. This work is a collective effort, and we’re grateful to our partners who help us build a safer, healthier Lowcountry.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office stands with the Columbia Police Department following the tragic death of CPD Officer Chris DeLong.

Officer DeLong, 29, was killed in the line of duty after responding to an incident at a park in the Garners Ferry Road area. A two-year veteran of the department, Officer DeLong was married and the father of two young children.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with the second Columbia officer who was wounded and transported to an area hospital for treatment. We pray for their recovery and for strength for their loved ones and fellow officers during this difficult time.

The suspect was also shot and died at the scene.

We extend our deepest condolences to Officer DeLong’s family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Columbia Police Department. We will never forget his service and sacrifice.

💙 Today in the Charleston County Fallen Officer Memorial Garden, only the monument for Police Officer John Corde Meyers is lit blue. He died in the line of duty 100 years ago Meyers, a Charleston County Police traffic officer, was killed Aug. 28, 1926, on Spring Street in Charleston when his motorcycle collided with a street car. Witnesses said Meyers had been passing another vehicle when his motorcycle struck the left front corner of the oncoming street car, throwing the officer and his motorcycle under another car. Meyers, 32, had been on the traffic force for four months. He was survived by his wife and six children. We remember his .

“Be the change you want to see.” Lt. Tony Brooks never forgot where he came from.

He grew up in the same community he now serves with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. The streets he once walked as a kid are now part of the area where he works, and the experiences that shaped him growing up continue to influence the way he approaches law enforcement today.

But Tony also knows his story could have turned out differently.

Years ago, one decision could have changed the course of his life before his career ever began. He credits his mother with stepping in at a pivotal moment, keeping him grounded and helping him become the man he is today.

Now, after 15 years with CCSO, Tony hopes his own story can be a positive example for others.

Charleston County Sheriff Carl Ritchie had the opportunity to speak at the South Carolina Attorney General’s press conference in Columbia on Monday, detailing a significant multi-jurisdictional operation that resulted in indictments involving cartel and gang members and the confiscation of guns and drugs.

The investigation began more than a year ago through the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and grew through the support and expertise of more than a dozen law enforcement agencies.

Collaboration and partnership were critical to the success of Operation Last Stand. This operation is a powerful example of what can be accomplished when agencies work together, share information and remain committed to keeping our communities safe.

Hydration of Hope 💜💧

This Overdose Awareness Month, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office continues our commitment to meeting people where they are—because support, care, and hope should always be within reach.

On August 27, 2026, from noon to 4 p.m., our Community Wellness Unit, in partnership with FAVOR Lowcountry, Recovery Unplugged, the City of Charleston Police Department, and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, will be in the McClellanville, Awendaw, Ladson, and Lincolnville communities providing free water, snacks, support, and resources to those in need.

This event follows a similar outreach effort hosted on August 4th, continuing our efforts throughout Overdose Awareness Month to connect with community members where they are—today and every day.

Hydration of Hope is one of several initiatives focused on compassion, support, and awareness as we work together to uplift our communities.
